New 3SC goalkeeper, Richard Ocheayi says the Super Eagles deserved praises and not the whiplash that greeted the countdown to the Nigeria versus Cote d’Ivoire tie before match day and specifically praised the duo of Godfrey Oboabona and Sunday Mba, who play in the Nigeria Premier League (Npl).
He reckoned that many Nigerian did not give the Eagles a chance to advance but he was happy the players changed the tide with their top notch professionalism displayed throughout the game against a better rated Ivory Coast.
Ocheayi enthused that the victory recorded by the Eagles against The Elephants showed that Nigerians need to stand by their teams at all times and should not be dissuade even when the teams are not playing up to expectation.
The former Lobi Stars, Kaduna United and Enyimba shot stopper commended the heroics of the Nigeria Premier League players in Coach Stephen Keshi's 23 man squad to South Africa. He heaped plaudits on the duo of Godfrey Oboabona and Sunday Mba who have been brilliant in the games they have featured.
"The home based players too have done the domestic league a lot of good and no one can fault Keshi's decision to give some of the home lads a chance.
"Oboabona and Sunday Mba really made my day against Cote D'Ivoire and in their previous matches too," Ocheayi added.
"We are through to the semi-final and we have made many Nigerians within and outside the country to shut their mouths.
"It was not an easy one at all and considering the players got the win against top rated Ivoriens who have Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, Gervinho, Kolo Toure but to mention only a few showed the Eagles' character amidst tense situation," he concluded.
