'Super fit' Mikel trains with rest of Nigeria squad in Portugal

The Chelsea midfielder has reported in the Faro camp of the national team and has dispelled fears about his health by participating in a work out with the remaining players


Nigeria can rest assured that Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel will be a part of their squad to the Africa Cup of Nations later this month.

Fears had been raised following the player's absence from the Blues' squad in three consecutive matches after he picked up a knee knock in the English Premier League game against Norwich City in December.

Mikel arrived the camp of the Super Eagles in Faro, Portugal on Saturday and has now joined the other members of the squad in training.

Goal.com had exclusively reported on Saturday that the national team doctors would examine the player's fitness when arrives camp.

National team media officer Ben Alaiya has exclusively informed us that Mikel has reported to camp and is doing well.

“Mikel is super fit and trained with the rest of the squad [Sunday] morning,” Alaiya told Goal.com. “He will train again in the evening at 4:45pm Nigerian time, so no fears about any injury to the star midfielder.

The Chelsea midfielder had a great 2012 where he won the Champions League as well as the FA Cup and he is expected to lead Nigeria’s charge for a third Afcon title.

The Super Eagles are drawn in Group C alongside Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia. a
