FIFA has announced it will relocate the 2014 Under-17 Women’s World Cup due to “unforeseen circumstances” leading to heavy stadium construction delays in original host nation Costa Rica.

World football’s governing body said the decision has been taken in agreement with the Costa Rican Football Federation. Various options are now being evaluated for a new host nation, with FIFA stating that a decision will be made as soon as possible.

The Women’s Under-17 World Cup was inaugurated in 2008 with New Zealand hosting the first edition. The event travelled to Trinidad and Tobago in 2010 and Azerbaijan last year, where France defeated North Korea in the final.

Recommendations over a new host nation will be presented to the FIFA Executive Committee, which will decide on a venue during its next meeting on March 20-21 in Zurich.
