Wanyama’s delight at making Goal 50

The Kenyan midfielder has expressed his happiness at being named as one of the best players of the previous 12 months in the world of football

Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama has expressed his delight at making Monday's Goal 50 list.

The Kenyan, who left Celtic for €14 million this summer for the Premier League side, is ranked 44th in the list, which comprises of the best players over the last 12 months in the world of football.

"It feels great that I have made the list and it gives me confidence going into the new season with my new club. I look forward to improving on the position now that I will be playing in the English league," Wanyama told Goal.

Barcelona star Lionel Messi won the Goal 50 award as the world’s best footballer after another record-breaking season. He beat Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year, scored 91 goals in 2012 and took his Barca tally to 313 goals in all competitions.

Messi heads this year's list in front of second-placed Franck Ribery, who helped European champions Bayern Munich win an historic treble. Last year’s winner Cristiano Ronaldo is third.
