Volkan proud to save 'complacent' Ronaldo penalty
The Turkey goalkeeper spoke of his satisfaction at having denied "one of the best players in the world" from the penalty spot in his team's 3-1 friendly win over Portugal
Volkan Demirel has explained that Cristiano Ronaldo's complacency allowed him to save the Portugal ace's spot kick in Turkey's 3-1 international friendly victory on Saturday. The Fenerbahce custodian parried away the 27-year-old's attempt to make it 2-2 deep in the second half to cost the Seleccao the chance of staging a comeback and dent their preparations for Euro 2012.
After the match, Volkan stated that he always pursues the same routine when facing a penalty taker, but admitted his save to deny the Real Madrid winger was even more satisfying.
"I tend to dive to my left, but goalkeepers will understand me better," he said after the game.
"Neuer dived into a corner [against Real Madrid] and saved but then missed his next one. Ronaldo is arguably the best player in the world, but his complacency allowed me to save the penalty."
Portugal kick off their European Championship campaign against Group B rivals Germany on June 9.
