Lobi Stars head coach, Evans Ogenyi has expressed confidence over his side’s ability to win the race for the title in the second stanza after their 2-1 comeback victory against Heartland on Sunday.
Lobi edged to victory with two second half goals to beat their visitors’ first half 1-0 lead at the Chief Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina-Ala.
Ogenyi admitted it was a massive encounter against Heartland, showered praise on the resilience and fighting spirit which guaranteed the vital maximum points.
“It was actually an explosive match. Heartland refurbished their team and they capitalized on the defensive lapses of my boys and scored the first goal.
“But the team that comes from behind to win a match shows a lot of character. I give kudos to the fighting spirit of my boys. This outrightly shows we can contend for the top places. We have the capacity and potential to challenge,” Ogenyi said.
He further disclosed that the Benue State outfit, currently undergoing some reform after fresh signings during the transfer window, was just acclimatizing to the club’s playing philosophy.
He commended the players of Heartland for coming to the party with quality of play and admitted their guests showed the needed hunger and determination to win.
“We have also reorganized our team a little bit and it is a team under reconstruction with a combination of new and old players and about 50/50 representation.
“If you look at the team they are entirely a new set and they are still gelling. If you look at the squad combination today, it was 50/50 and the team is getting stronger by the day”, he explained.
“Heartland gave a very good fight and at the end of the day, the two teams gave good account of themselves. But I feel happy getting the three points because I told the players after halftime that they have to go back and up their game.
“I told them that first of all we have to cancel the first goal and see what happens afterwards and they returned for the second half with added determination which paid off”, he concluded.
