A first half penalty from Philip Auta propelled Fatai Amoo's team to a convincing win over the Aba Elephants on Wednesday afternoon
Sunshine Stars defeated Enyimba in a week 37 game of the Nigeria Premier League played at the Akure Township Stadium.
A first half penalty Philip Auta and a superb header from Ebenezer Odulami were all the Akure based outfit needed to end the title ambitions of their visitors.
The Fatai Amoo tutored men began the game on a terrific pace and in the process forced a great save from Enyimba goal keeper, Femi who looked the more busier of the two goal keepers. In the 20th minute of the encounter Sanni Emmanuel dribbled past two Enyimba defenders but his lightening strike was parried by Thomas who was well placed within the goal area.
As the game continued, the Aba Elephants began to grow in confidence and found their way into the hosts half but could not get the cutting edge as Ebenezer Odulami and his cohorts looked very calm and organised in the defence.
In the 44th minutes, Phillip Auta put Sunshine ahead with a cooly placed finish that sent goalkeeper Femi Thomas to the wrong side after referee Ibrahim from Kaduna state had called for a foul against Enyimba captain, Chinedu Udoji for handling the ball in the goal area.
On resumption of the second half, Enyimba mounted pressure on the Sunshine defence, but would have themselves to blame for poor finishing. Etor and Kingsley Sokari were the key culprits of the afternoon.
Sunshine then sealed victory in the 80th minutes after a good header from Ebenezer Odulami off a cross from his teammate, Ajani. Goalkeeper Femi Thomas was left with no choice as his attempt to clear the ball away proved futile.
With this result, Sunshine have guaranteed their stay in the Nigeria Premier League for another season while Enyimba will have to wait till another year to challenge for the Nigeria league diadem.
