The Peoples Elephant survived a late scare in Aba on Wednesday evening to nick the three points at stake
The early stages were frantic as the host squandered a number of good opportunities in the first 15 minutes as they looked determined to get a win that would brighten their chances of winning this season’s Nigeria Professional Football League, before veteran striker Emeka Nwanna got the breakthrough.
Akwa United began on a very bright note, threatening the Enyimba defence but goal keeper Femi Thomas was at his best as he saved virtually almost all the shots directed at him. Mfon Udoh never ceased to torment the Aba millionaire’s defence but Chinedu Udoji kept the Akwa United forward at bay.
In the 37th minute, Bishop Onyeudo found the back of the net but his efforts was ruled for an offside. Enyimba continued to push further and were rewarded by a goal towards the end of the first half through Emeka Nwanna's flying header that gave goalkeeper Victor Obiowo no chance to save.
Enyimba found their visitors particularly elusive in attack in the early part of the second half, yet the wasteful Emeka Nwanne could not capitalise on the disorganised backline as he failed to double Enyimba's lead by heading cowardly toward the goalkeeper.
Even with introduction of Hincur Son and Edon Namso by coach Justin Tenger, Akwa United could not get the much needed equalizer as the Aba Elephants defended well in the closing stages.
