The defender, who has been tipped for a call-up by Nigeria, notched his first goal of the season just before the league went into a three-month recess

Defender Brian Idowu scored a tantalising header as Amkar Perm defeated FC Orenburg 3-0 on Monday as the Russian Premier League went into a three-month winter break.

The 24-year-old, who is eligible to play for Nigeria through his father, featured alongside Super Eagles midfielder Fegor Ogude in the emphatic victory that left Amkar in sixth place with 24 points going into the recess.

Idowu got onto the end of a cross from Aleksandar Miljković to head past the goalkeeper in very icy conditions on Monday afternoon.

The left-sided defender has been a matter of speculation in recent months among Nigerian media who claim he is being considered for a call up by coach Gernot Rohr who wants to solve problems at the back.

Last month, Thisday reported that Rohr held talks with Idowu who was born in Saint Petersburg and was until 18 a player with the youth team of Zenit, the city’s famous club. However, he left after claiming he had suffered racial discrimination which limited his rise into the senior side.

Nigerian duo of Sylvester Igboun and Fatai Kehinde also ended the first half of the season with a win as Ufa defeated Siberian side Tom’ Tomsk 1-0 on Monday.

Igboun started the game while Kehinde came off the bench.
