The American MLS club gaffer has downplayed the rude gestures from the Nigerian forward, Obafemi Martins following his substitution in a league encounter
Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid has ruled out any possibility of his star striker, Obafemi Martins being punished for his offensive outburst following his substitution with Marc Burch in the 82nd minute of their game against LA Galaxy which ended 1-1.
The Nigerian was visibly upset at being substituted and made a point avoiding Schmid as he walked toward the bench.
In his remarks, the coach admitted players could be emotional during matches while insisting he had settled his rift with the former Levante goal merchant.
“It’s an emotional game, emotional players are emotional. That’s what you expect. Nobody is going to be happy when they come off the field. Oba and myself have talked about the situation, and he acknowledged the player going in for him, which I think is very, very important.”
“He was upset at being subbed out. It wasn’t where he was trying to show the world that he was upset with the coach. It was just something where he was frustrated coming out of the game because he’s a competitor. That’s what you expect all your players to be,” concluded the Sounders' gaffer.
