thumbnail Hello,

The Bafana Bafana record goalscorer has made an appeal to the Buccaneers management to keep the caretaker coach on in a full time role

Benni McCarthy has pleaded with Orlando Pirates boss Irvin Khoza to give Augusto Palacios the head coach job on a full-time basis next season.

‘Njenje’ took over in a caretaker capacity following the dismissal of Julio Leal earlier this year, and led the club to the League title on Saturday – a second successive treble for The Buccaneers.

Former Dutch international Ruud Gullit has been linked with the job, but McCarthy says the players would love to see Palacios been given an opportunity to show what he can do.

“We go out there and we die for him and for the team – obviously there is this understanding between the players and him,” McCarthy said, according to Kickoff.com. “We have this fighting spirit because we have a coach who understands us and who knows our way.

“We just hope that they don’t spend a lot of money bringing in big-shot coaches; coaches who maybe don’t understand the South African way and players.”

He added, “This [Palacios] is a coach who does his homework. We are familiar with what everybody is supposed to do and we know how to take on teams because he does the research.

“But the best thing about him is that he takes advices from the players, and that’s why we have this understanding.”
