The midfielder believes the Azzurri are unrivalled in the middle of the park ahead of World Cup 2014

AC Milan’s Riccardo Montolivo says Italy will have the best midfield on show at the World Cup this summer.

Teenage prospect Bryan Cristante started in favour of Montolivo in the Rossoneri's 4-3 loss to Sassuolo on Sunday, but with 56 Italy caps to his name, Montolivo is all but certain to be on the Azzurri's plane to Brazil.

“I think the our midfield is the one with most quality in the world,” said Montolivo, speaking to MF Gentleman magazine.

“There are world-class players: Andrea Pirlo, Claudio Marchisio, Thiago Motta, Daniele De Rossi, Antonio Candreva. And then there's me.”

Montolivo started Italy’s last match in a major tournament when they lost 4-0 to Spain in the Euro 2012 final and the 28-year-old highlighted the need for good fortune if Cesare Prandelli's side are to win international football's greatest prize.

He added: “We went through a European Championships and Confederations Cup and played well, but in a competition like the World Cup luck is important.

"To win the World Cup we hope to continue to do what has been done so far, on a path that started three years ago.”

Italy have been drawn alongside Uruguay, England and Costa Rica in Group D of the World Cup.
