thumbnail Hello,

The 21-year-old is delighted to have played a role in the Catalan club’s success this season, while he has also insisted that their Copa del Rey tie with Getafe is far from over

Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto is keen to follow in the footsteps of Xavi, admitting that he would be happy even just to be a little like his illustrious team-mate.

The 21-year-old has been tipped as the World Cup winner's successor at both club and international level, but he is embarrassed by such talk.

"He is one of the best players in the world and I’m just starting my career with the first team," Sergi Roberto said at a press conference.

"There are very few like Xavi. I would already be happy to be just a small part of the player Xavi is."

The midfielder has been given an opportunity to break into the first team under Gerardo Martino this term and he believes his decision to stay and fight for a place at Barca has been vindicated.

"At first it took me aback, but I’ve played 12 consecutive matches now," he pointed out. "If I had said a year ago that I would find myself in this situation now, I would have been happy.

"At no time did I consider leaving the club. This is my eighth season here and I think I made the right decision to stay."

Meanwhile, Sergi Roberto insisted the second leg of Barca's Copa del Rey clash against Getafe on Thursday will not be a formality - even though the Blaugrana lead the tie 4-0 on aggregate.

"It is far from over," he declared. "In the league, we were losing 2-0 after 15 minutes [Barcelona won 5-2] and in the cup, if they score two quick goals, we may be in trouble. We cannot relax.”
