Nacho Monreal was delighted with Malaga’s 4-0 victory on Saturday after admitting his side had struggled in La Liga this season after European fixtures.

The Andalusian club, who drew 2-2 with Anderlecht on Tuesday, secured the three points against Granada with goals from Joaquin, Javier Saviola, Ignacio Camacho and Roque Santa Cruz.

“It was important to come back from a Champions League match and deliver a good performance,” the 26-year-old said exclusively to Goal.com after the game.

“We have had a hard time this season after returning from Champions League matches. So it was perfect with a 4-0-victory today.”

The victory for Manuel Pellegrini’s side was vital as they prepare for a run of tough fixtures that will see them face Sevilla and Real Madrid before Christmas and then Barcelona in the New Year, but the left-back is looking forward to the challenge.

“We end the year quite complicated. They will be difficult games, but also exciting matches. So here we just have to be ready from the start and be focused and try to get as many points as possible," he added.

For Monreal the defeat of Granada was also special as it saw him start a game for the first time in two months after recovering from a back injury, and he was keen to acknowledge the support he received from fans.

“I am very happy. I've been sidelined for a long time, and I had much desire to come back and fight for the team," he explained.

"Today I got the opportunity to enjoy the first 45 minutes, and it was great. I still need something to find the rhythm and to be back at the same level as I was before the injury.

“I would like to thank the fans for the warm welcome they gave me today, when I returned to the starting line-up. They have been fantastic all season.”
