2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying preview round-up

2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying preview round-up

Latest Barcelona-Real Madrid Preview: Clasico rivals set for crunch Copa showdown Previous

The return leg games of the 2013 Afcon qualifying will continue on Sunday across the continent after which the journey to the finals will enter its decisive stage

Sixteen teams will be vying for tickets to the second and final round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying on Sunday during the return leg games of the first round.

Burundi, Kenya and Chad come into their encounters with slim leads from the first leg, but must strive to consolidate or conserve that advantage to progress, while DR Congo have little doubt of steamrollering their way to the next round on Sunday at home in Kinshasa following their 4-0 win over Seychelles in the away fixture.

Togo – Kenya | Sunday June 17 Venue: Lome

Although Kenya won the first leg 2-1 at home, they will face a fierce Togolese team, determined to soothe their wounds from a 2-0 loss to DR Congo last week in the 2014 World Cup qualifying. The Sparrow Hawks coach Didier Six is confident his side will be able to change the score line in their favour in Lome.

Malawi – Chad | Sunday June 17 Venue: Blantyre

Chad were able to beat Malawi 3-2 at home in the first leg, but the inability to conserve their lead each time due to a porous back half might be a major setback as they face Malawi at home in Blantyre to defend their narrow advantage.

DR Congo – Seychelles | Sunday 17 Venue: Kinshasa

After walloping Seychelles 4-0 at home in Roche Caiman, how will DR Congo handle the team in Kinshasa on Sunday? They may aim to score more goals or take it easy to avoid injuries. Seychelles are logically eliminated from the competition and the home side will be glad to entertain their fans once more after the 2-0 victory against Togo last weekend at the same stadium.

Mozambique – Tanzania | Sunday 17 Venue: Maputo

After holding Tanzania to a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in Dar Es Salaam, Mozambique are hoping to see off the challenge in the reverse fixture at home in Maputo on Sunday, however, the Taifa Stars will put up the same fight to keep the clash open.

Benin – Ethiopia | Sunday 17 Venue: Cotonou

Ethiopia failed to carry off the first leg against Benin at home, despite dominating the visitors throughout the meeting, which ended in a goalless draw. With home advantage on their side, the Squirrels will strive to best their hosts to book a place in the next round.

Zimbabwe – Burundi | Sunday 17 Venue: Harare

Burundi have a slim 2-1 lead from the first leg but must be prepared to hold off the assaults Zimbabwe will be launching at their home ground in Harare, in an attempt to retake the lead and leap into the next round.
