Heartland and Lobi Stars were in good form as they started the Super Four pre-season tournament on a winning note after defeating Kano Pillars and Rangers on Wednesday.
The Nigeria Premier League Super Four started this afternoon in Kano and the two clubs have garnered three points in their first matches.
In the first game, Lobi Stars showed the stuff they are made of when they defeated Rangers International by a lone goal.
Daniel Okorie scored the goal for the Makurdi side in the 25th minute of the game. Rangers who missed glaring chances in the match could not believe they lost the game they looked to have under their control.
Three times the Flying Antelopes’ strikers hit the cross bar, but they could not score until the end of the game.
Rangers’ assistant coach, Monday Odigie said the match has taught them a lesson. "We have now seen some mistakes and we hope to correct them before the start of the new season."
Coach Jupiter of Lobi Stars noted that they were lucky against the Enugu side.
Heartland had to wait till the last minutes of the game before they got the lone goal victory against Kano Pillars.
Pillars with their vociferous supporters entered the game with the hope of getting their first three points, but met a well drilled Heartland side that left nothing to chance. Pillars did all they could, but it was Heartland's Happiness Okuoka that scored on the dot of 90 minutes when fans at the Sani Abacha Stadium had assumed a point was already won.
The next round of matches will be played on Friday with Heartland and Rangers taking to the pitch in the first game, while Kano Pillars will engage Lobi Stars in the second game.
