Copa Lagos: Bartholomew Ibenegbu not afraid of Portugal

Heartland midfielder says Portugal cannot derail their plans to retain the Copa Lagos trophy

One of Nigeria's Beach Soccer's most consistent player, Barthlomew Ibenegbu has boasted that Portugal cannot stop their ambition of retaining the Copa Lagos trophy.

Ibenegbu who was part of the team that won the trophy in the first edition of the competition noted that they have a better team this year and would not fail to win the Cup again.

"Yes we know that Portugal is a strong country when it comes to Beach Soccer," Ibenegbu told

"We respect them. But they cannot be the stumbling block to our ambition to retain the trophy.

"Last year we dealt with Brazil, South Africa and England and Brazil is a much better playing beach soccer nation than Portugal but we handled them.

"Portugal will try, but they will not be able to contain us as we learnt so much from the last competition in Dubai.

"We played against a major force like Russia and we were not disgraced. Infact some of the tricks we learnt from the competition will used against Portugal and the other countries during Copa Lagos.

"I am confident of my team because we have a reliable squad that can stand the test against any team in the world," Ibenegbu added.

Copa Lagos which enters its second edition this year begins December on 14 through 16 at the Eko Atlantic City with Portugal, Argentina and Lebanon the three countries that will join Nigeria in the tournament.
