The Super Eagles head coach has stated the rationale behind his invitation of players for the March 5 international friendly against the El Tri
Stephen Keshi has backed his team list for the international friendly against El Tri of Mexico billed for Atlanta, USA on March 5.
In his 23-man squad, the ‘Big Boss’ recalled captain Joseph Yobo and included new faces like former junior internationals Ramon Azeez and Shehu Abdullahi, and Belgium-based strikers Imoh Ezekiel and Michael Uchebo.
In his explanations, Keshi said he had the future in mind before drafting his team list for Mexico.
“The players I have invited are the ones we are looking at in the next 4 to 5 years as we are trying to build a team not just for tomorrow but for the future,” Keshi told Brilafm.net.
“If we get any young player that is good, then we bring him in now so that he can start gaining valuable experience but a lot of Nigerians do not want that, they want you to assemble a team now and win everything tomorrow but football doesn't work like that.”
He also explained his reason for leaving goalkeeper Chigozie Agbim, who was criticised for his performances during the African Nations Championship, out of the squad.
“I just have one game and not two, if I was going for two games, then I can invite all the three goalkeepers but since it’s just one game, there is no need to invite all the three of them,” he concluded.
