Enyimba got off their Nigeria Premier League Super Four campaign to a bright start as they tore apart Bayelsa United 3-0 in the opening match played at the Abuja National Stadium on Friday afternoon.
A hat-trick from new boy Bashar Abdulrahman was all the Peoples Elephant needed to make a bold statement of their intention of winning the pre-season competition.
Ladan Bosso’s Bayelsa began the game on a bright note with Mutiu Adegoke launching a missile in the goal area of the Enyimba defence which did not threaten goalkeeper Chijioke Ejiogu.
Few minutes later, the Aba Millionaires got their first chance on goal but Thomas Zenke’s effort was only good for the empty spectators’ stand.
Anthony could have put Enyimba ahead in the 36th minute but his free kick at the edge of the Bayelsa United defence was expertly saved by goalkeeper Gideon Gambo.
While it looked like the first half would end on a barren note, Abdulrahman opened his account of the afternoon with a cool finish off a cross from Zenke on the far left.
The former ABS player doubled the lead in the 67th minute after his missile outside the goal area beat Gambo who was way off his line. Five minutes later, Bashar completed his hat-trick after dribbling past the opponents’ goalkeeper to slot home the third goal.
All efforts for Ladan Bosso’s side to get on the scorers sheet profit futile as Chijioke Ejiogu plus a well organised defence by the Aba millionaires thwarted their attacking forays.
