The Magpies forward picked up an arm injury that could rule him out of a return to the Super Eagles next month
Ameobi fell over his arm in a challenge against an opponent in the Baggies’ 1-3 loss to Portuguese side Rio Ave on Sunday.
The striker came on as a substitute to score his side’s lone goal but then picked up the injury late on. It’s not yet known how long he will be out of the game as his club has yet to announce the result of an x-ray.
Coach Alan Pardew said that it is a massive setback to his team’s preparations for the new season. "Shola is the big worry," Pardew told Nufc.co.uk.
"He went over on his arm and we had to finish the game with ten men.
"He will go for an X-ray and we will wait to see what the results of that are."
Ameobi had recently become available for the national team again after missing out of the trip to the Africa Cup of Nations due to a clause in his contract.
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has expressed a liking for the big forward who he hopes can provide greater options upfront.
