Four former Federation Cup winners kicked out

Surprises as past winners Dolphins, El Kanemi Warriors, Plateau United and Kaduna United were shown the exit door in the Round of 32 games played across Nigeria on Wednesday

Despite upsets recorded by lower league clubs, top guns Enyimba, Heartland, Enugu Rangers, Warri Wolves and Lobi Stars were among the elite teams that progressed to the Federation Cup Round of 32 on Wednesday.

However, four time winners Dolphins of Port Harcourt were dumped out by Akwa Starlets 4-2 on penalties after the regulation time had ended goalless at Umuahia.

Besides Dolphins, Plateau United (1999), El Kanemi Warriors (1991, 1992) and Kaduna United (2010) were the other past winners who were defeated by Niger Tornadoes, Kano Pillars and Abia Warriors respectively.

Bayelsa United and Nembe City were the other top clubs that were inexplicably eliminated at the Round of 32 by their opponents. Both clubs entertained ABS and Sunshine Stars in all premier league club contests

Nasarawa United won with the highest of margins of the round after annihilating City of David (COD) United of Lagos 4-0 in Ilorin while Lobi Stars with goals from Anthony Okpotu and Barnabas Imenger outclassed Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM) 2-0 at the Gabros Stadium, Nnewi.
