The Nigeria centre back had a feel of stardom when admirers besieged him for photos and autographs during his club’s training during the week
Stardom has its headaches as defender Godfrey Oboabona has found out. The Nigeria defender was mobbed by happy fans during his club’s training in Owo during the week.
The 22-year-old returned to Sunshine Stars for the break period announced by officials of the national team following the 4-1 victory over Ivory Coast last weekend.
As the Akure Gunners trained on the pitch of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, Ondo State, fans who were happy to see him besieged the defender for photo opportunities and autograph signing.
As he gladly granted their requests, he picked up an injury in the hand as the uncontrollable crowd massed on him. It is not known if the player was injured by a pen or a piece of wood.
"It was not deliberate. The fans just wanted to take pictures and there is nothing wrong with that,” Oboabona told KickOffNigeria.com.
"I think maybe it happened by mistake, but I'm okay. It's nothing serious," he said.
Following his brilliant performance at the Confederations Cup where he was listed at number 32 (the top ranked Nigerian) in the Castrol Index ahead of world class defenders Martin Caceres, Cesar Azpilicueta and Raul Albiol, Oboabona is in the sights of top European clubs and could make a move to Europe this summer.
