Nigerians Abroad: Kalu Uche, Ideye and Chrisantus score braces

It was a good weekend for Nigerian strikers in Europe as three players scored braces in their leagues

Mikel Obi started for Chelsea against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday as the Blues were held to a 2-2 draw when Luis Suarez scored a 97th minute equaliser. Victor Moses came on for Oscar in the 84th minute. It was Mikel’s 22nd league appearance for the European champions while Moses has made 20 appearances with one goal.

Victor Anichebe and Everton lost 1-0 away to Sunderland on Saturday to put a dent in their hopes of finishing amongst the top four and playing Champions League football next season. Anichebe started for the Toffees but was substituted in the 77th minute by Steven Naismith.


Brown Ideye is back to scoring ways as he added two goals to the one he scored last week to make it 16 league goals for the season. Dynamo Kiev beat Zorya 5-0 on Saturday with Ideye, Lukman Haruna and Taye Taiwo all starting for the former Ukrainian champions.

Ideye scored his first goal in the 38th minute and got his second in the 81st to make it 3-0. Roman Bezus and Oleh Husyev added further goals in the 88th and 95th minutes to make it a comprehensive victory.

Lucky Idahor came on for Zorya in the 61st minute to replace Yannick Boli. Idahor has scored three times in 21 league appearances. Super Eagles invitee, Michael Babatunde was on the bench for all 90 minutes as his club, Kryvbas lost 2-0 away to Metalurh Zaporizhya on Saturday.


Ahmed Musa led the fight back for CSKA Moscow on Sunday as the league leaders fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against local rivals, Spartak Moscow.

Musa scored the first goal for his team in the 73rd minute while Alan Dzagoev completed the comeback four minutes into added time. it was Musa's 10th league goal in 23 appearances while Emmanuel Emenike is still not match-fit for Spartak. CSKA still lead the log standings with 57 points, with five matches left to play.

Obinna Nsofor started and played all 90 minutes for Locomotiv Moscow as they held Kuban Krasnodar to a 0-0 draw at the Stadion Kuban on Saturday. the former Super Eagles striker has scored two goals in 22 league appearances.


Kalu Uche continued his good scoring form for Kasimpasa on Friday by scoring the two goals that brought victory to the newly promoted side. It was the Nigerian's 18th and 19th league goals of the season and kept his team in fourth place on 46 points. His first was a header in the 18th minute to record his 18th goal and a left footed shot for his 19th goal of the season.

Orduspor had Yussuf Ayila in the line-up as the Nigerian defender is on-loan from Dynamo Kiev. Kasimpasa stay fifth on the table with 46 points and are pressing on for a place in European competitions for next season.

Mersin İdmanyurdu stay rooted to the bottom of the table as they lost 1-0 to Karabükspor on Saturday. Nduka Ozokwor started for İdmanyurdu while Raheem Lawal joined the fray in the 66th minute. Joseph Yobo with Fenerbahce lost 2-0 to Gençlerbirligi on Sunday though they remain second on the table with 55 points, seven behind leaders, Galatasaray.

Michael Eneramo and Sivasspor got a 1-1 draw away at Kayserispor on Sunday with the former Super Eagles striker shown a yellow card on 88 minutes. Eneramo has scored eight goals in 26 league appearances.


Nosa Igiebor
started for Real Betis on Saturday as they confronted Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu and were beaten 3-1.

Igiebor tested Diego Lopez with a right footed drive in the eighth which Lopez saved. He was substituted at half time by Jorge Molina.

Igiebor, who scored his first Betis goal last weekend against Sevilla had an 86% pass accuracy from 35 touches of the ball. He won 67% of his aerial duels and made one successful tackle.


Former junior international, Macaulay Chrisantus (pictured above) scored twice for Las Palmas as they beat Xerez to keep their promotion hopes alive.

Chrisantus scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season for sixth placed Las Palmas on Saturday. The former youth international opened the scoring in the 17th minute and got the winner in the 62nd minute.

Las Palmas have 58 points, five from second-placed Girona with seven matches to play. Chrisantus has scored in six away matches and in just one home game - against Huesca last December. Ikechuckwu Uche's Villarreal are in fourth position with 61 points.

Lazio lost 1-0 to Udinese on Saturday with Ogenyi Onazi making his 11th league appearance for the Biancocelesti. Ogenyi started and played all 90 minutes as Lazio fell to a goal from Antonio Di Natale scored in the 19th minute. Onazi had a pass accuracy of 84% from 88 touches of the ball and won 60% of his aerial duels. He won seven tackles while he committed two fouls.

Lazio are eighth on the table with 51 points and need to win all their remaining five matches to have a chance of playing in Europe next season.


Obafemi Martins returned from injury for the Seattle Sounders and scored the only goal that gave them victory over Colorado Rapids, Sounders’ first win in 2013.

Martins scored on a rebound off a shot by Shalrie Joseph in the 27th minute of the first half and celebrated his first MLS goal with his trademark back-flips. Sounders were the only team without a win before Martins' winner.
