The on-loan striker for Cologne in Germany’s second division was a surprise inclusion in the list
Mainz player on loan to Cologne, Anthony Ujah has been called up for the first time to the Super Eagles. He was included in the 30-man list that also includes Gambo Mohammed, a striker for Kano Pillars. Mohammed scored 15 goals last season and already has three in four league games this term.
Obafemi Martins is conspicuously missing from the list and could have been replaced by the on-loan Cologne striker.
The 22-year old Ujah has featured for the U-23 Eagles and has scored 11 goals for Cologne in Germany’s second division in 22 games. These goals have helped Cologne to third place in the league - a playoff position and could help the famous German club make a swift return to the Bundesliga.
The 30 players will be used for the raft of matches that the Super Eagles will be involved in starting from May 31, when they confront Mexico in Houston that ends at the Confederations Cup in Brazil.
Also making a return to the team are strikers – Emmanuel Emenike and Kalu Uche. Emenike has recovered from the injury that beset him during the Nations Cup and Kalu Uche’s 16 goals in the Turkish league must have convinced the technical crew to hand him another chance.
In all, four goalkeepers, eight defenders, seven midfielders and 11 strikers make up the 30-man list.
The 12 home-based players will leave for a training camp in Germany on May 15 while the 18 overseas based players will join them as their leagues end.
