Ladan Bosso: Flying Eagles must convert scoring chances

The former national U20 handler says John Obuh's boys cannot afford to be wasteful against their opponents as the African Youth Championship reaches crucial stages

As Nigeria U20 prepare for their make or mar encounter against Congo DR on Saturday at the African Youth Championships taking place in Algeria, Ladan Bosso is of the opinion that the greatest undoing of the Flying Eagles is their inability to convert good scoring opportunities.

Speaking with, the chief coach of newly promoted Bayelsa United believes that throwing away clear cut chances to bury the ball into the net may spell doom as the competition progresses.

“The midfield is okay. Our problem is that our strikers are too wasteful. In the first game against Mali, we dominated in all the departments but still lost because our boys couldn’t score. I think the coaches should correct this because we can’t afford to continue this way,” he said.

Predicting Nigeria’s last group game against first timers, Congo DR, the man who led the Flying Eagles to the Canada 2007 World Youth Championship believes the John Obuh-tutored side will scale through.

“They have won their first game of the tournament, so let’s put our hopes on them. I am really sure they will win their next game. Once they qualify for the next round which is booking a ticket to the World Youth Championship, Nigerians should be rest assured, the boys will improve on their performance,” Bosso concluded.

Nigeria needs only a draw to book a place in the semi finals of the tournament on Saturday.
