It was a lean scoring weekend for Nigerian strikers in the leagues in Europe as almost all drew blanks in their respective leagues

ENGLAND

Mikel Obi and Victor Moses started on the bench for Chelsea as the Blues struggled to a 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday. Peter Odemwingie also came off the bench for the Baggies.

Moses came on for Eden Hazard in the 80th minute while Mikel was introduced in second half extra time for Juan Mata.

Odemwingie came on in the 62nd minute for Marc Antoine Fortune and could have capped his substitute appearance with a goal in the 83rd minute as his dipping free kick was parried for a corner kick. It was his second game back in the Baggies' team.

He had another attempt in the 93rd minute as his left footed shot from the right side of the box was saved in the bottom right corner.

Odemwingie was booked in the 85th minute for a deliberate hand ball.

Moses also had a chance to settle the game in the 84th minute but the attempted left footed shot from the left side of the box was high and wide.

Victor Anichebe came on in the 74th minute for Leon Osman while Hope Akpan played all 90 minutes for Reading in their 3-1 loss at Goodison Park on Saturday.

UKRAINE

All three Nigerians currently at Dynamo Kiev - Brown Ideye, Taye Taiwo and Lukman Haruna started on Sunday against Kryvbas. Haruna shone the brightest as he got the opening goal in the 47th minute but Kryvbas equalised in the 72nd through Vladimir Priyomov. Haruna was substituted in the 83rd minute for Marco Ruben as the home side pushed forward for the winning goal.

Michael Babatunde played for Kryvbas for 76 minutes before being pulled off for Denis Miroshnichenko. Kiev are now fourth in the table while Kryvbas stay in 12th place.

GERMANY

Sidney Sam started his ninth game for Bayer Leverkusen in their 2-1 come-from-behind win over VFB Stuttgart on Saturday at the Bay Arena. The hopeful Nigerian international played for 79 minutes before being substituted.

Sam had 93% pass accuracy and won all his aerial duels from 63 touches. He also successfully completed three dribbles. He was replaced by Arkadiusz Milik as the homers sought an equaliser which they got in the 82nd minute through Stefan Kiessling and the winner in the 86th minute through Lars Bender.

Sam was a threat all the time on the pitch and provided three crosses that should have led to goals. He also shot twice on target with efforts in the 31st and 61st minutes blocked. Sam has scored five goals in 13 league games.

Joseph Akpala came on for Aaron Hunt in the 69th minute in Werder Bremen's 1-0 loss to Augsburg which was their third straight defeat. Akpala has played sparingly and has just one goal in 18 league appearances.

FRANCE

John Utaka played all 90 minutes of Montpellier’s 2-0 win over Rennes on Saturday. Apam Onyekachi came off the bench for Rennes in the 36th minute to replace injured Herita Ilunga.

Utaka attempted three shots on goal.  His first attempt was in the 23rd minute but his left footed shot from the left side of the box was blocked. Another left footed attempt was blocked in the 29th minute and his last attempt was in the 62nd minute but that time his right footed shot from the right side of the box went high over the bar.

He had 63% pass accuracy from 39 touches, committed one foul and completed three dribbles successfully. Apam had a pass accuracy of 78% from 21 touches and won all his aerial duels.

TURKEY
Joseph Yobodid not play any part in Fenerbahce's 3-2 loss away to Besiktas on Sunday. With that result, Fenerbahçe are now third on the league table with 40 points.

Mersin İdmanyurdu continue to prop up the league table with another loss away to Kayserispor on Sunday. The two Nigerians at İdmanyurdu, Nduka Ozokwo and Raheem Lawal started on the bench though Ozokwo joined the fray in the 46th minute but Lawal was unused.

Michael Eneramo returned to Sivasspor's first 11 but could not prevent their 1-0 loss away to Bursaspor on Sunday. The former Super Eagles striker was replaced in the 79th minute by Arkadiusz Piech. Eneramo has seven goals in 21 league matches.

Kalu Uche will be hoping to add to his 13 league goals on Monday as Kasimpasa confront Trabzonspor.

SPAIN

Obafemi Martins was dropped to the bench after all the hoopla about his impending transfer to the MLS to join Seattle Sounders. Levante were away to neighbours Valencia in a local derby

Obafemi Martins came on for Robert Acquafresca in the 58th minute and touched the ball eight times. The match ended 2-2.

Odion Ighalo could not make it four goals in four consecutive weekends as Granada were beaten at home by Mallorca through a late goal. Ighalo was shown a yellow card in the 33rd minute in a match that had the Nigerian striker committing many fouls.

His only attempt on goal was in the 61st minute when his left footed shot from the centre of the box went high. He was replaced in the 73rd minute by Youssef El-Arabi.

Nosa Igiebor is still stuck in Nigeria as his team Real Betis were held to a 3-3 draw by Real Siciedad on Sunday.
