The long serving member of the Port Harcourt side has been appointed the new skipper to replace the former captain who joined a rival club from Akwa Ibom
Rotimi joined Dolphins in 2004 and has won the league twice and two FA Cups with the team. He had been an assistant to Emah Godwin but will now serve in acting capacity with the departure of the former to Uyo.
Head of the Dolphins technical crew, Stanley Eguma says Rotimi has already been acting as captain and will continue to do so until he is named substantive captain of the side.
“Of course he has the qualities and that is why he was acting captain previously. Now we expect him to do a good job at leading the team this season,” Eguma said.
And as part of pre-season program of the club, Dolphins will take on Bayelsa United in a friendly match at the Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium on Wednesday at 3pm.
Media Officer of the club, China Acheru said on Tuesday that the pre-season camp in Nnewi and the strenuous first two weeks of the year were more about fitness and that the club’s coaches are now into more technical and tactical issues of the game.
“We are through with ensuring the fitness of the players long ago. Now the coaches are imposing their style of play on the team, especially for the new players.
“It’s now about match preparation, team work, attacking and defensive formations, attacking and defending set pieces amongst others. That is why we continue to play friendly matches to get the players into real match situations.
“The game against Bayelsa United is one of those games that the results won’t matter but how well the players show what they have been taught on the training ground,” Acheru sad.
The media officer added that the target is the league opener against Akwa United the coaches are working to ensure that the players peak at the right time.
