Nigerian players helped their various clubs to qualify for the Europa League round of 16 on Thursday
Shola Ameobi scored for Newcastle on Thursday to help his side into the Uefa Europa League round of 16.
The Nigerian striker who was used as the lone striker in freezing Kharkiv scored from the penalty spot in the 64th minute to hand the Magpies a round of 16 encounter with Anzhi Makhachkala.
It was Ameobi’s 15th goal in Europe after 10 years in European competitions which started against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
Mikel Obi started his first match for Chelsea after his Afcon heroics as well as Victor Moses. The two Nigerians were on for all 90 minutes of the encounter against Sparta Prague. Chelsea had to wait until added time in the second half when a goal from Eden Hazard helped them to a 2-1 aggregate win over the Czech side.
Their next match as they bid to win the lesser European trophy will be against Steaua Bucharest on March 7 in Romania.
Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo played for Fenerbahce for the first time after lifting the Nations Cup trophy on February 10.
He played all 90 minutes and helped his side to a 1-0 aggregate win over Bate Borisov at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadyumu in Istanbul.
Yobo had 93% pass accuracy from 55 touches and won all aerial duels that he contested. He was yellow carded in the 76th minute of the encounter.
Obafemi Martins scored the only goal for Levante as the Spanish side beat Olympiakos 1-0 away to go through to the round of 16 on a 4-0 aggregate.
Martins scored as early as the ninth minute through a header and could have got a second in the 17th minute but his left footed shot from outside the box missed by inches. He got a yellow card in the 43rd minute and was replaced in the 83rd minute by Robert Acquafresca with two shots on target for the night's work.
He also had 83% pass accuracy from 31 touches but won only 14% of his aerial duels.
Taye Taiwo and Lukman Haruna started the match for Dynamo Kiev while Brown Ideye came on at the start of the second half for Admir Mehmedi.
Kiev lost 1-0 and were knocked out by Bordeaux who won 2-1 on aggregate. Though Kiev had over 60% of possession and five shots on target, Bordeaux scored with their only shot on target through Cheick Diabaté in the 41st minute.
Haruna had a header marginally off mark in the 67th minute while Taiwo had two attempts on target in the 33rd and 42nd minutes. Both shots were through his right foot and both went very close.
