Two Nigerians were on the score sheet for their clubs as the Uefa Europa League round of 32 commenced on Thursday
Obafemi Martins scored first Europa goal as Levante beat Olympiakos Piraeus 3-0 at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia on Thursday.
It was Martins' first involvement in the Uefa Europa Cup after arriving in Valencia after last season's official transfer window had closed. Martins scored in the 56th minute off an assist from Barkero, who himself had scored a penalty in the first half.
Martins missed a penalty in the 30th minute of the game as his left footed kick went wide after the goalkeeper had gone in the opposite direction. But he made up for that penalty miss as he blasted in Levante's third goal in the 56th minute from a counter attack. His left footed chip over the goalkeeper was a peach. Martins had 75% pass accuracy from 31 touches and had three shots on target.
Haruna scored in the 20th minute when he beautifully controlled a cross in the box from Taiwo and blasted into the net. But Ludovic Obraniak equalized three minutes later. Taiwo was the star man for the Kiev side and got the highest rating in the match.
He had 90% pass accuracy and won 88% of his aerial duels. He also contributed one shot on the offensive side. Haruna had six shots on target though he scored just once and he could have won the game for the hosts in the 89th and in the 93rd minutes but his goal-bound shots were blocked.
Joel Obi and Ogenyi Onazi were not listed for Inter Milan and Lazio respectively. Lazo drew 3-3 away at Borussia Monchengladbach while Inter defeated CFR Cluj 2-0 at the San Siro. Mikel Obi and Victor Moses were also not listed in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Sparta Prague.
Shola Ameobi came on for Cheick Tiote in the 79th minute of Newcastle’s barren 0-0 draw at home against Metalist Kharkiv.Follow Babajide Alaka on
