Nigerians Abroad: Ighalo scores at last as Anichebe goes off injured against Manchester United

The Granada forward is getting into good form as the 2012/13 season begins to wind down

Victor Anichebe started for Everton on Sunday against Manchester United but ended up going off injured in the 57th as Everton lost 2-0.

Anichebe took the place of Nikica Jelavic and did not get any chances to get on the score sheet against the 20-time English Premier League champions through indecision and some wayward passing from his team mates let United off the hook at times when Anichebe got into good scoring positions.

Nedum Onuoha was in the starting line-up for Queens Park Rangers and they were bashed 4-1 by Swansea on Saturday. The Nigerian-born defender has played 16 times for Rangers in their calamitous season so far.

Peter Odemwingie has been fined the equivalent of two weeks wages for his errant behaviour in the last transfer window where he tried to force a move to Queens Park Rangers.

Odion Ighalo scored his first goal of the season against Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday and lead his side to a surprise 3-0 away win.

The former U-23 national team captain scored six times last season but has not enjoyed a sustained spell in the side for which he is on loan from Udinese. Ighalo scored in the 51s minute of the encounter played at Estadio Municipal de Riazor.

The win lifted Granada to the 15th position with 26 points. They have now won successively for the first time in the 2012/13 season, following on from the surprise 1-0 victory over Real Madrid last week.

Obafemi Martins won the penalty that enabled Levante take the lead against Malaga on Saturday but the Valencia-based side could not hold on to their lead and ended up losing the match 2-1. That means that Levante have won twice and lost four times in the league in 2013.

Martins was excluded from the Super Eagles who just claimed a third title on Sunday in South Africa has seven goals in 18 league matches.

Onyekachi Apam was back on the bench as Rennes ran out as 2-0 victors over Toulouse on Sunday at the Stade de la Route de Lorient. Apam has been out injured for the last three weeks and will want to start playing as John Boye returns from the Africa Cup of Nations Cup where he helped Ghana to fourth place.

After two splendid home wins over Sochaux and Reims, Montpellier were brought crashing down to earth with a 4-1 hammering at the hands of St Etienne on Sunday. John Utaka was on for all 90 minutes of the encounter.


Uche Nwofor scored his fifth goal for VV Venlo on Saturday against Heerenveen. The former junior international started the match and scored in the 36th minute as Venlo continued their fight against automatic relegation from the Eredivisie.

Venlo currently sit in 17th place in the 18-team league format with 16 points from 22 matches.


Derrick Ogbu started for OH Leuven as they confronted Club Brugge at the Jan Breydelstadion on Saturday but the Nigerian striker ended up on the losing side - 3-1, to stay 10th on the table with 31 points and 26 matches played.

Ogbu was substituted in the 84th minute by Bjorn Ruytinx and has scored six goals in 26 appearances this season. Their next match is against Beerschot next Saturday.

Imoh Ezekiel returned from injury for Standard Liege but they were dimmed by Mons 1-0 at home. The Nigerian youngster was subbed in the 57t minute by Iranian international, Reza Choochannejhad.

Ezekiel has scored 12 goals in 20 matches as Liege stay fifth on the table with 43 points from 26 matches.


Raheem Lawal played his first match for second from bottom, Mersin İdmanyurdu as they lost at home to Fenerbahçe 1-0. Lawal was in the initial 30 called for the Super Eagles but was dropped on the eve of the competition.

Lawal came on in the 59th minute for Emmanuel Culio while Another Nigerian Nnamdi Ozukwo played all 90 minutes.

Michael Eneramo was missing from the Sivasspor side that won 2-0 against Trabzonspor on Saturday. Eneramo is the leading goal scorer for his side with seven goals.
