Three Nigeria internationals not called up for the Nations Cup scored this weekend for their clubs in Europe

ENGLAND

It was FA Cup weekend and Danny Shittu kicked it off on a good note as he scored for Millwall in their 2-1 victory over Aston Villa last Friday to make the last 16 of the oldest Cup competition in the world.

Shittu equalised for the Championship side in the 27th minute with a bullet header. Millwall scored the winning goal in the 89th minute via John Marquis. Millwall will now travel to face Luton Town in the fifth round on February 16.

West Brom’s Nigerian striker, Peter Odemwingie is currently embroiled in a bitter row with his club over refusal to grant him permission to leave for struggling Queens Park Rangers. The Nigerian striker has taken issue even with the Baggies’ supporters on Twitter. The transfer window will close until the end of the season on Thursday.

Victor Anichebe played all 90 minutes for Everton as the Toffees won 2-1 away at Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup. Anichebe has five goals in 13 appearances for Everton this season. Everton have been handed a trip to Oldham Athletic who beat Everton’s neighbours, Liverpool 3-2 on Sunday.

FRANCE

John Utaka scored his fifth goal in an injury-blighted season in Montpellier’s 2-0 win over Sochaux at the Stade de la Mosson on Saturday. It was the Nigerian’s 17th match of the season of which he has started 15 games, been substituted five times and played as a substitute twice.

Utaka doubled Montpellier’s lead in the 34th minute after Emanuel Herrera had scored the first on 28 minutes.

He also had goal scoring attempts in the 82nd and 64th minutes. In the 64th, his header from the centre of the box was too high and with eight minutes on the clock, his right footed shot from the centre of the box was saved by the goalkeeper.

He has had a combination of hip and thigh injuries with groin strain and a bout on the side-lines with a hamstring injury. But he seems to have weathered that injury storm to lead his team, who are defending champions fighting for a place in Europe next season after featuring in this year's Champions League for the first time.

Meanwhile Onyekachi Apam was missing in Rennes’ 2-2 draw with Olympique Marseille, for which the Ayew brothers (left out of Ghana’s Nations Cup squad) scored both Marseille goals. The Nigerian defender has been stricken again with injury.

SPAIN

Obafemi Martins started and completed all 90 minutes as Levante got back into winning ways with a hard fought 2-1 home win over Real Valladolid on Saturday to maintain their sixth position on the league table.

The Nigerian striker who was snubbed by the Super Eagles for the 2013 Afcon currently on in South Africa last scored for his team on December 9, 2012 in Levante’s 4-0 rout of Mallorca. Martins got yellow carded in the 28th minute of the first half to make it a half dozen yellow cards to go with his six goals in 16 league matches.

TURKEY

Kalu Uche scored his tenth league goal for Kasimpasa on Saturday as his team walloped Karabükspor 3-0 away. The Nigerian has been a revelation for the newly promoted team this season and has averaged a goal every two matches in the league.

In total, he has scored 11 goals in 20 matches this season to lead the scoring cart for his club and joint second in the Super Lig goal scorers’ table with Bobo, a goal behind Umut Bulut who leads the way with 11 league goals.

Nduka Ozukwo helped Mersin İdmanyurdu to a 3-0 home win over Michael Eneramo's Sivasspor. The former junior international has scored once this season in 16 appearances while Eneramo has five goals in 17 games.

GERMANY

Sidney Sam came on as a substitute for Bayer Leverkusen in the 0-0 draw away to Freiburg on Saturday.

Sam, who has indicated interest in representing Nigeria at international level after appearing for Germany in age-grade teams, came on for Gonzalo Castro in the 75th minute. The left footer has scored four goals in nine appearances for the season.

Werder Bremen lost 3-2 away to Hamburg with Joseph Akpala on the bench for all the 90 minutes. Bremen also lost two players to red cards in the course of the match.
