The recently capped Nigerian international scored off the bench to help his team to a 1-0 win over QPR

Shola Ameobi scored on Saturday for Newcastle against Queens Park Rangers to mark his call into the 32-man list released by Coach Stephen Keshi on Thursday.

The burly striker who won his first cap against Venezuela last month scored for Newcastle to help his struggling team to a 1-0 win.

After the game, his manager, Alan Pardew praised the Nigerian for his cool head and finish which helped Newcastle to a win after two straight defeats.

The crowd at St. James’ Park had booed the decision of the manager to withdraw Papiss Cisse with Ameobi in the 70thminute but Ameobi justified his manager’s confidence by scoring in the 82ndminute.

“I know the crowd weren't particularly pleased when I took Cisse, a goal-scorer, off but I just felt Shola [Ameobi] could make the difference,” Pardew told Daily Mail.

“He's a big man and this was a big occasion and he likes big occasions.

He also referred to the fact that QPR were worthy opponents even though they are in 19th position on the league table.

“It said QPR on the programme but really it was bigger than that.

“I think we all knew that and he has that calm head - he knows what is demanded here - to produce a quality goal, and it won us the game.

“I wanted to get Shola [Ameobi] on the pitch, and thank goodness I did because it was a really class finish.

“He could have taken the shot with his right foot, which is his stronger foot, but to have that composure in that area is first-class.'

Ameobi’s finish had class written all over it as he calmly placed a left-foot shot cum pass past across Rob Green, who was in goal for QPR.
