The Nigerian youngster has already fulfilled his goals for the season at the half way mark with 10 goals
When Imoh Ezekiel headed in Standard Liege’s first goal against Mechelen on Sunday, he achieved his goal for the 2012/13 season – to score 10 goals in the league.
"Before the season began, I wanted to score ten goals. I'm there. Now, I have raised the bar to fifteen goals,” Ezekiel told dhnet.be.
The 19-year old former 36 Lions striker has scored five goals in the last four matches propelling Standard Liege up the table to their present third position.
One of the characteristics of his game is his big leap and his speed – both qualities he demonstrated against Mechelen. His goal was from a towering header and his speed created the second goal for his strike partner, Michy Batshuayi.
"It is a matter of timing. If you do not jump at the right time, you cannot be present at the reception of the ball,” Ezekiel said on his scoring four headers this season already.
He also spoke glowingly about the almost telepathic partnership that he has forged with Batshuayi.
"I'm happy to play alongside Michy [Batshuayi]. We get along very well. You know, this is my friend.
“We're the same age. In the field, we understand ourselves very well and we talk a lot.
“This is a plus for the team. We are also fast, and so we put a lot of pressure on defenders and this poses major problems for opposing defenses.," he added.
Ezekiel did not forget to mention the confidence that Coach Mircea Rednic has instilled in him.
"When he [Rednic] arrived, he told me many things. The coach often tells me that I can achieve great things. With his speech, he gives me a lot of confidence,” Ezekiel concluded.
And with the way he is playing, Standard Liege are bracing themselves for the inevitable offers that will come in January from more powerful teams. And for the boy from Lagos, who was seeing snow for the very first time in January – it has been a roaring success in Belgium.
