With Chelsea off to the Club World Cup tournament that held in Japan, it was left to Peter Odemwingie to carry Nigeria’s flag in the Premiership.
Odemwingie started West Brom’s 0-0 draw with West Ham on Sunday and finished the game. The Nigerian was the most dangerous outlet for a goal in that match as he tried to create and score from the left side of West Brom’s attack.
Odemwingie’s left footed shot from outside the box was saved in the 15th minute and he missed a chance in the 57th minute when another left footed shot from outside the box flew over the cross bar.
He also had another attempt blocked in the 70th minute as West Brom failed to score in a third consecutive league match. Odemwingie had an 81% pass completion ratio from 51 touches and attempted three shots.
In Japan, Mikel Obi and Victor Moses had to settle for second place as Chelsea were beaten 1-0 by Corinthians in the final match of the Fifa Club World Cup. Obi was on the bench for all 90 minutes. Moses started and almost scored in the 39th minute but for the brilliance of Corinthians’ goalkeeper Cassio.
Chelsea are still third in the English Premier League but are 13 points behind league leaders, Manchester United.
Imoh Ezekiel scored his 10th goal in Belgium’s Pro League on Saturday as Standard Liege got a 2-0 away win against Mechelen.
Ezekiel who is in his first full season in Europe scored the opener for Standard in the 40th minute while his persistence and cross created the second goal for Michy Batshuayi to wrap up the victory in the 76th minute. And as it was last week, Ezekiel was supplied the ball by Jelle Van Damme from the left flank as the youngster planted a firm header past the Mechelen goalkeeper for his tenth goal of the season.
The 19-year-old former 36 Lions striker transferred to Belgium in January 2012 and scored one goal in seven appearances last season. This season has become a very fruitful one as he now has 10 strikes in 16 league appearances and his goals have pushed Standard up the table in recent times to third with 35 points, 11 points behind league leaders, Anderlecht. Their next match is next Sunday against Club Brugge who are fourth on the table.
Oh Leuven were beaten 2-1 on Sunday by league leaders, Anderlecht as Derick Ogbu started on the bench. Ogbu has scored four league goals this season and came on in the 77th minute for Koen Weuts.
Montpellier won for the second time in four days in Ligue 1 when they followed their 2-1 win over Brest last Wednesday with a comprehensive 4-0 bashing of Bastia on Sunday.
John Utaka scored on Wednesday and followed up that performance with an assist for the second goal at the Stade de la Mosson-Mondial for Emanuel Herrera in the 48th minute of the encounter. Montpellier are now up to ninth on the table, nine points from leaders, PSG.
Onyekachi Apam played his second consecutive game for Rennes in the league on Sunday as he featured for 90 minutes in their 2-0 win over Valenciennes.
Schalke 04 lost 3-1 at home to Freiburg on Saturday with Chinedu Obasi on the bench for all 90 minutes and their coach, Huub Stevens got sacked with immediate effect on Sunday. Schalke have not won in the league since November 10 and have slid down the table to seventh position – 17 points from Bayern Munich who lead the table.
Joseph Akpala came off the bench as is now customary in the 82nd minute to help Werder Bremen rescue a point in their 1-1 draw at home to Nurnberg on Sunday. Akpala came on for Aaron Hunt with Nurnberg leading through a Timo Gebhart goal but Nil Petersen got Werder their equaliser in the 88th minute to earn a point.
Akpala has played just 230 minutes in his 13 league appearances and he has a goal to his name while Sidney Sam was not listed for Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 win over Hamburg.
Joseph Yobo continued to earn and play for Fenerbahce though they lost 2-1 to Galatasaray in a top of the table clash on Saturday. The Super Eagles captain was on for all 90 minutes.
Meanwhile Micheal Eneramo was also on the losing side as Sivasspor lost 1-0 away to Karabukspor.1.Lig
Little known Nigerian striker, Chibuzor Nwogbu scored for Adanaspor in their 3-2 home win over Karsiyaka. Nwogbu has scored three times this season.
His first attempt was in the 21st minute and then he put a header on target in the 29th minute which was saved by Roberto in goal for Zaragoza.
Martins was caught offside in the 35th minute and got a yellow card in the 49th minute for a bad foul. He had another attempt in the 61st minute but that was also blocked in the six yard box..
