Twenty two year-old Marshall Nwoke, a Project Management Technology student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State, has emerged the second winner of Goal.com Nigeria’s Quiz Spectacular.
Nwoke’s article on Hull City forward Sone Aluko’s qualities that should enable him make Nigeria’s final 2013 Africa Cup of Nations squad was adjudged to be well written and showed a fan who understands the game and can analyse a footballer’s strength.
Nwoke writes: “Aluko’s ability to take free kicks accurately could perhaps be his biggest asset to the national team. He scored several free kicks during his time with Rangers in Scotland and is currently doing the same with Hull.
“With the Super Eagles lacking a specialist free kick taker since the retirement of Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha, Aluko could fit into that role exceptionally well.”
Chief editor Lolade Adewuyi hailed the impact of the competition on the Nigerian football media industry.
“Since we started with the jersey giveaway competition, we have been able to show our fans that we care about them and that they mean a lot to us,” said Adewuyi.
“Our idea of having an essay writing competition on a football site is to encourage scholarship and to develop critical thinking and writing skills among our readers. It is not enough to know about the game, one should be able to express it in writing.
“We are glad that we’ve been able to encourage our readers to make an attempt at writing and we hope they will continue to do so in their private lives,” he said.
The full article will be published on the website on Thursday, December 13.
Nwoke will receive his prize at a small ceremony later in December where he will meet Nigeria striker Martins personally.
