thumbnail Hello,

The Nigerian striker scored for the first time in the league since September

Emmanuel Emenike returned to scoring ways on Friday after a goal drought of close to nine weeks though Spartak Moscow lost 4-2 to Zenit.

The Nigerian has been the point of discussion over the last few days with some fingers pointed in his direction as the cause of the sack of former manager, Unai Emery.

Emenike refused to come on as a substitute in the match against Dynamo Moscow on November 25 and Emery resigned his post thereafter.

Emenike was the highest goal scorer for Spartak last season with 13 goals and recently signed a new bumper contract that made him one of the highest paid players in the Russian League.

Emenike scored a consolation for Spartak in the 81st minute after Zenit had gone 4-1 up. The Nigerian striker last scored in the league, two goals against Rostov on September 23 to make it five league goals for the season.

Emenike just got back from a back injury sustained while turning out against Liberia in Calabar in October was also confirmed to be slightly overweight which was why he was not included in the starting 11 against Dynamo Moscow.

Dmitri Popov, Spartak Moscow’s Sporting Director said Emenike is 1kg overweight.“He's one kilogram overweight and he is currently faced with the tough task to returning to the desired weight,” Popov told championat.com.
