The three countries invited for the second edition of Copa Lagos were chosen for their fans, prowess and community building
“This year's edition of Copa Lagos will build on the maiden edition,” said Adamu. "Beach Soccer is still an emerging sport and there are a lot of people who have not heard of it. We want to continue building the awareness of Beach Soccer and we now have a growing fan base on Facebook and Twitter."
The other three countries coming for the tournament are Portugal, Lebanon and Argentina and he explained the reasons for these choices.
“We invited Lebanon because they are a really exciting team to watch and I believe they will thrill the crowds.
“Also in Nigeria we have a very strong Lebanese community, I am sure that Nigerians are proud of this, so it made sense to invite Lebanon.
“We invited Argentina because we have a huge fan base in South America. South America is where Beach Soccer originated and Argentina is a very big name in Beach Soccer.
“Another reason for the inclusion of a South American team is that their fans are fantastic, a lot of them travelled a great distance to be at the event last year, and they made it a colourful occasion adding to the atmosphere.”
And for Portugal, he said: “We had tried several times to get Portugal. They are such a great team so you can imagine that they are in great demand, earlier we were told it would not be possible.
“However an opportunity came up and we are delighted to have them. They are an awesome team and have some of the best players to have ever played the game in their side.
“It will be a real treat for the people of Lagos to see them play as they have super stars throughout the team. I can’t wait to see Nigeria take them on,” Adamu added.
The fixtures released show that Portugal will face Argentina in the opening match on December 14, while Nigeria will tackle Lebanon on the same day. All four teams will play a round-robin with the country and the most number of points will win the tournament that will end on December 16 at the Eko Atlantic City.
