The Braga left back believes the Super Eagles can win the Nations Cup in South Africa next year if the whole team is united as one
With the African Cup of Nations (Afcon) barely weeks away, Elderson Echiejile, Super Eagles left back believes that the Super Eagles can win the Afcon trophy for the third time in their history only if the team is united.
“The fans lost faith in the team after we failed to qualify for the 2012 Nations Cup,” Echiejile told fifa.com.
“But to clinch the trophy would get the entire country back behind us, so our target is to win in South Africa. We are very positive and ready to give our best.”
The Braga man is one of the players that will report to the Eagles camp in Faro, Portugal in January for two weeks prior to the start of the tournament on January 19.
“We often have just three, four days before a big game. That is difficult for players from many different clubs to come together and play as one.
“But we believe in two weeks we would have achieved some level of understanding among us.”
Nigeria will be up against defending champions Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia and the most important clash seems to be the one against the Zambian team coached by Herve Renard.
“Obviously, our main group rivals would be Zambia.
“They keep the ball very well and their confidence is now sky high after what they achieved at the last competition.
“We know we will have to work for everything we will get in this match, but we have the quality to beat any African team on the day.”
But while extolling the Zambian team, he warned that the other teams cannot be handled with kids gloves.
“Zambia remain the biggest threat, but the other teams cannot just be wished away. They earned the right to be in the competition and we just have to beat them to go past the group stage,” he added.
