The national team coach says that the Germany-born player has decided to represent his father's country of birth and might be ushered into the squad as the 2013 Afcon nears
Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has revealed to Goal.com that Germany-born Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, Sidney Sam has signified interest in playing for Nigeria in the forth coming 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
Keshi said he was convinced after chatting with the player, whose father is Nigerian and whose mother is German, that he was ready and very anxious to lace boots for his father’s land.
“Sidney Sam and I spoke [on Monday] and he was really very keen to come and play for Nigeria now. This is cheering news any way. I actually told him that Nigeria is his father’s land and we would like to see him don the Nigerian jersey for his fatherland. He then told me that he would be glad to join the team,” said Keshi.
“So we would see him during the training sessions and towards the [Africa] Cup of Nations. When he comes around we will see how it goes”, Keshi disclosed.
The 24 year-old winger has played for the German youth teams but is still eligible to star for Nigeria.
