thumbnail Hello,

There were few goals by Nigerians in Europe this week as the season enters the winter stages

ENGLAND

Another stand out performance from new Chelsea boy, Victor Moses as he scored his first league goal for the European champions against Swansea on Saturday. Moses started the match with Mikel Obi and he was a live wire throughout his stay on the pitch.

Moses had the highest rating for Chelsea in the match against Swansea - a mirror of last season's outcome.

Moses scored from a header from very close range to the top left corner after Eden Hazard's corner kick had been flicked on by Gary Cahill.

He could have scored earlier through a header from close range in the centre of the box but that effort was some way off target.

Moses was also the man of the match last Wednesday when he helped Chelsea to a 5-4 win over Manchester United in the Capital One Cup.

Obi also had a strong game showing both his defensive and offensive capabilities. He blocked a goal bound shot in the 34th minute from Jonathan De Guzman.

Nedum Onuoha played for nine minutes for Queens Park Rangers against Reading on Sunday as Rangers earned another point to make it four for the season.

Championship

Nigeria international Sone Aluko's 16th-minute strike earned in-form Hull their fourth win in five matches. Aluko swept in a low left-footer for his fifth goal of the season.

The promotion chasers secured their fourth successive home league victory over Barnsley, Former Super Eagles midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana was also on show for Hull City for the duration of the encounter.

SCOTLAND

Ambrose Efe scored an unfortunate own goal in the dying moments of Celtic’s game away against Dundee United on Sunday, not quite ideal preparation for their Champions League duel with Barcelona on Tuesday.

Efe, who has endeared himself to the Bhoys’ fans with his performances after joining from Israeli club, MS Ashdod, committed the blunder in additional time in the second half at Tannadice Park. The Nigerian defender had replaced Thomas Rogne in the 20th minute.

Celtic were on course for a comfortable 2-0 win until Gary Mackay-Steven, in the 89th minute before substitute Ambrose headed into his own net while attempting to clear a cross.

Celtic still lead the SPL but are tied with Hibernian on 21 points though with a better goals difference and a game in hand. Rabiu Ibrahim was on the bench for 90 minutes and he is yet to feature in any league game this season.

SPAIN

Obafemi Martins did not score against Sevilla on Sunday at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán where the match ended 0-0.

The Nigerian attacker has scored more than 75% of his team's goals since he joined on a free transfer from Rubin Kazan.

Martins helped Levante defend from the front and he had just one shot with a 69% pass completion rate. He also put in two succesful tackles and fouled his opponents twice, from which he collected a yellow card in the 90th minute for a flailing elbow on Cicinho.

Real Betis will be in action on Monday when they travel to face Getafe, hoping to maintain their good start to the season with Nosa Igiebor likely to start. Betis are in sixth place with Levante a spot above with 17 points.

FRANCE

Montpellier drew 1-1 with Troyes on Saturday with John Utaka in the fray from the off for the defending champions. Utaka has been plagued with all sorts of leg injuries this term and can only boast of scoring once in the league. He was replaced in the 39th minute by Anthony Mounier and it is feared that he could have fallen to another leg injury though there has been no official word from his club.

Apam Onyekachi was an unused substitute in Rennes’ 1-0 win over Reims on Saturday at the Stade de la Route de Lorient. Onyekachi has not had the best of seasons – playing just twice in 11 weeks of action. He made 12 appearances last season and Rennes have moved up to ninth position on the Ligue 1 standings.

GERMANY

Sidney Sam scored the first goal for Bayer Leverkusen in their 3-2 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf. Sam, who is being courted by coach Stephen Keshi continued his good form after scoring the second goal against Bayern Munich last week at the Allianz Arena.

Joseph Akpala made his fifth substitute appearance for Werder Bremen in their 2-1 win over Mainz on Sunday at the Weserstadion. Akpala has scored one goal in seven matches.

UKRAINE

Brown Ideye was on the bench while Lukman Haruna started for Dynamo Kiev in their 2-0 win over Tavriya on Saturday at the NSK Olimpijs'kyj Stadium in Kiev.

Ideye has not scored in the league since September 14, when he scored a goal against Karpaty. He came on in the 84th minute for Marco Rubén. Ideye could have been kept on the bench because of Kiev’s crucial Champions League match against Porto, whom he scored against two weeks ago. Taye Taiwo and Yussuf Ayila were not listed for the encounter.

Abayomi-Owonikoko Seun created the second goal for Volyn in their 2-1 home win over Hoverla-Zakarpattia. Seun has played five games and scored a goal this season.

Super Eagles defender, Michael Odibe was an unused substitute for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in their 2-0 win over Metalist. Odibe scored his first league goal of the season last week against Karpaty.

RUSSIA

Ahmed Musa played all 90 minutes as CSKA Moscow maintained their grip at the top of the standings with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lokomotiv Moscow on Sunday at the Olimpiyskiy stadion Luzhniki. Musa has scored five goals in 13 league appearances for the "Red Army".

Obinna Nsofor was on the Lokomotiv bench for all 90 minutes and has scored a goal for his team this season.

TURKEY

Joseph Yobo was not listed by Fenerbahçe in their 2-1 away win over Akhisar Belediyespor. Yobo is out with an injury that could still require surgery.

Nduka Morisson Ozokwo played all 90 minutes for Mersin Idmanyurdu in their 3-0 away loss to Besiktas on Sunday at the Fiyapi Inonu Stadyumu. Ozokwo has played 10 matches this season but is yet to score, he scored thrice last season.

Michael Eneramo could not add to his four goals as Sivasspor lost 2-0 away to Orduspor.

Kalu Uche's Kasımpaşa will play on Monday against Bursaspor away. Ik Uche's elder brother is the leading Nigerian scorer in Turkey with five goals in nine matches.

BELGIUM

Imoh Ezekiel played for the 10th time this season for Standard Lige as they beat Derick Ogbu's Oh Leuven 2-0 on Sunday. The 19-year old striker has scored five times this season while Ogbu has four goals.

Ezekiel was substituted by Luis Seijas in the 54th minute of the game.

Michael Uchebo started for Cercle Brugge in their 3-2 away defeat at Mons on Saturday. Uchebo was replaced in the 66th by Rudy with Cercle chasing the equaliser. Uchebo is yet to score after his transfer from VVV Venlo in Holland.

CHINA

Peter Utaka ended the season with a goal in Dalian Aerbin's 2-1 away win over Hangzhou on Saturday.

Utaka thus finished the season as the second highest goal scorer with 20 goals. He scored the second Aerbin goal in the 56th minute after Yu Dabao had opened scoring for the visitors in the 35th minute.

Yakubu Aiyegbeni did not get on the score sheet as his club, Guangzhou R&F drew 1-1 with Jiangsu Sainty.

Aerbin ended the season in fifth position while Guangzhou R&F ended the season in seventh position with 42 points. Aiyegbeni scored nine goals in 14 matches after his switch from relegated Blackburn Rovers.
