Mikel Obi battled valiantly but unsuccessfully for Chelsea in their 3-2 loss to Manchester United on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. It was Chelsea’s first loss in the 2012/13 season of the English Premiership and the second in six days.
Obi almost helped Chelsea to an equaliser in the first half when his cross was diverted unto the post by Jonny Evans. He was however shown a yellow card in the 76th minute of the second half when referee Mark Clattenburg got all the attention.
Victor Moses was an unused substitute. Chelsea have made an official complaint of bad language allegedly used by Clattenburg against two of their players – one of which was Obi. According to Daily Mail, Chelsea made their complaint at 7.45pm, after Clattenburg had already been confronted by Chelsea’s Chief executive Ron Gourlay, along with Obi and manager Roberto Di Matteo.
Peter Odemwingie again started on the bench for West Brom when they lost 2-1 to Newcastle on Sunday at St James Park.
Super Eagles fringe player, Omatsone Aluko scored for Hull City in the eighth minute against Bristol City on Saturday. Aluko has now scored four times in 13 matches for the promotion chasers who are in sixth position with 22 points, six off the leaders, Cardiff City.
Levante’s new striker, Obafemi Martins is on the path to catching all the headlines again. He scored his third and fourth goals in five matches in Levante’s 3-1 win over Granada on Sunday at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia.
Martins who transferred on a free from Russian side Rubin Kazan is now definitely ticking the right boxes as the Super Eagles prepare for the Nations Cup in January.
Martins scored the first on 12 minutes with a crisp left-footed shot into the bottom corner. He added the second on 60 minutes when another left-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right to the bottom right corner.
Martins also had a hand in the third goal by Pedro Rios netted on 73 minutes.
Odion Ighalo came on for Gabriel Torje in the 56th minute and he assisted their consolation goal through Youssef El-Arabi in the 84th minute.
Real Betis beat Valencia 1-0 on Saturday with Nosa Igiebor playing the full match. He tussled with Fernando Gago in midfield and dominated the Argentine midfielder. Igiebor recorded a 86% accuracy in his passes while having 66 touches of the ball. He also completed four dribbles successfully made two tackles.
Super Eagles striker, Ikechukwu Uche scored the two goals that won the match for Villarreal against Mirandes on Saturday while former Eaglet, Macaulay Chrisantus scored the equaliser and the winner for Las Palmas in their 3-2 win away at Guadalajara.
Super Eagles winger John Utaka scored his first goal of the season for Montpellier in their 3-1 win over Nice on Saturday. Utaka who was out injured for about four weeks scored the second goal for the defending champions in the 64th minute of the match.
Imoh Ezekiel scored his fifth goal for Standard Liege in their 2-1 win over Cercle Brugge. This was the former 36 Lions striker’s eighth game.
He opened the scoring in the 30th minute, his compatriot Michael Uchebo was a second half substitute and Uchebo is yet to score for his new club after transferring from VVV Venlo.
Derick Ogbu helped Oh Leuven to a 3-1 away win over Beerschot on Saturday. Ogbu who scored a hat trick three weeks ago assisted the third goal by Stefan Gislason in the 88th minute. Oh Leuven moved up to sixth on the table with 20 points, two off the leaders, Genk.
Abayomi Owonikoko Seun scored for Volyn, the equaliser in their 1-1 away draw with Arsenal Kyiv on Friday. This was Seun's fourth match in the Ukrainian Premier League after his transfer from Zestafoni of Georgia. Volyn are now eighth on the table after 13 weeks with 17 points.
Dynamo Kiev drew 0-0 with Illichivets on Sunday with Brown Ideye the only Nigerian on the pitch. Taye Taiwo and Yussuf Ayila were absent from the squad while Lukman Haruna was an unused substitute. Dynamo stay third but 14 points off leaders, Shakhtar Donetsk, who have maximum points after 13 matches.
Obinna Nsofor came on for Maicon in the 72nd minute for Locomotiv Moscow but they lost to a 94th minute goal to Amkar Perm on Friday. Roman Pavlyuchenko equalised for Locomotiv in the 37th minute but the Moscow side were hit with a sucker punch in the last minute of added time as they flooded forward to get the winning goal.
Nsofor has scored one goal in 12 appearances this season as he pushes for a place in the Super Eagles for next year's Africa Cup of Nations Cup tournament.
Uche Kalu continued his impressive scoring run in Turkey’s second division when he scored the third goal for his club, Rizespor, in their 3-1 away win over Konyaspor on Saturday.
Kalu, who transferred recently from Enyimba of Aba has now scored six goals in nine matches and could be a transfer target for some clubs in the elite division in Turkey. Rizespor lead the table with 20 points from nine matches.
In the Netherlands former Flying Eagles star Uche Nwofor bagged a consolation for bottom-side VVV Venlo who lost at home 4-1 to NAC Breda. Venlo have managed just three points from ten games and sit at the bottom of the Eredivisie table.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni scored his ninth goal in 13 matches for Guangzhou R&F in their 3-2 loss to Qingdao Jonoon. Guangzhou R&F dropped down a place to sixth on the table with 41 points.
Joseph Akpla was an unused substitute for Werder Bremnen in their 1-1 draw away to Greuther Furth on Saturday. Akpala has scored two goals since his transfer from Club Brugge in Belgium.
