Nigerians Abroad: Obafemi Martins scores second La Liga goal while Derick Ogbu breaks duck with three in Belgium

There were a raft of goals from Nigerian strikers as the invited players prepare to leave on international breaks

Mikel Obi played his 250th match for Chelsea on Saturday as he featured for 82 minutes in the straight forward 4-1 win over Norwich.

The Nigerian midfielder has played all the league matches for the defending European champions in the 2012/13 season though he has been substituted in three games as he was given a breather when he was replaced by Oriol Romeu.

The Nigerian is yet to score in the Premier League in 183 matches – the most by any midfielder without a goal in the EPL. Obi had 97 touches on the ball, and had a 91% pass completion ratio.

The other Nigerian at Chelsea, Victor Moses was an unused substitute after his exertions in Europe in midweek.

Peter Odemwingie made his return to the West Brom starting 11 and the Baggies beat Nedum Onuoha’s QPR 3-2 to maintain their good beginning to the league campaign.

Odemwingie had a right footed shot from outside the box is blocked in the 41st minute but was involved in another dangerous play in the 43rd but the referee chose to give his a stern warning instead of a yellow card,

He was substituted by Markus Rosenberg in the 63rd minute. Odemwingie has scored a goal this season.

Everton called on Victor Anichebe in the 81 minute of their 2-2 away draw against Wigan on Saturday. Anichebe replaced Gary Neville as the Toffees were looking for an equaliser which they got in the 87 minute through a penalty by Leighton Baines. Everton slipped to fourth from second after that draw. Anichebe has scored two league goals this season from five games. Anichebe only had three touches on the ball after coming though he won all his aerial duels.


Obafemi Matins scored his second goal in La Liga to help Levante to a 1-0 victory over Valencia. Martins also scored on his debut – a winning goal against Real Sociedad and effectively his first two league goals have won six points for his side.

Martins scored with a thunderous left footer from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal from a pass from Gustavo Munúa.

Martins had almost opened the scoring in the first minute of the match when his left footed shot from the left side of the box missed the target by inches.

He was however shown a yellow card in the first minute of the second half for dangerous play.

Nosa Igiebor started his first match for Real Betis and played for 57 minutes before he was substituted. Igiebor also came close to scoring in the 43rd minute but his attempted volley flew over the cross bar.

Igiebor then provided a pass with his head to Rubén Castro, but Castro’s shot hit the crossbar from outside the box.

Derick Ogbu opened his scoring account in the new season in style as he scored three goals and created the fourth in Oh Leuven’s 4-0 away victory over Sporting Charleroi on Saturday.

The Nigerian striker had struck out for the first seven weeks of the new season but broke that scoring duck as early as the second minute. He added the second in the 70th minute and completed his hat-trick in the 85th minute.

Imoh Ezekiel served out his two-match suspension as his club, Standard Liege surprised high-flyers Anderlecht with a 2-1 win.

Joseph Akpala started his second Bundesliga game away against Augsburg but Werder Bremen fell to their fourth loss in the new season.

Akpala played all 90 minutes and has scored a league goal after his transfer from Club Brugge in Belgium. This is Werder Bremen's worst start to a Bundesliga season since 2004.

Chinedu Obasi played his second game of the season after coming back from injury. Obasi came on as a substitute for Ibrahim Afellay in the 73rd minute. Schalke won the match 3-0 and climbed to third on the table with 14 points from six matches.


It was a bad weekend for the Nigerians at Spartak Moscow as they lost on the road, 2-1 to FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. Dynamo won their first Champions League group stage match midweek but could not follow up that win with a league win. They are in third position on 24 points, nine from leaders, Shakhtar Donetsk, who have 33 points from 11 matches.

Taye Taiwo and Brown Ideye were in the starting eleven with Yussuf Ayila as an unused substitute while Lukman Haruna is still missing.

Lucky Idahor helped Zorya to a 2-1 victory over Karpaty on Saturday, Idahor played all 90 minutes.


Michael Eneramo scored in the 87th minute for Sivasspor to help his side secure a 2-2 draw at home to Bursaspor. The Super Eagles striker and Jakub Navratil scored in the last five minutes of the match to rescue the unlikely draw. Eneramo has now scored three goals in six league matches.

Nnamdi Ozokwo came on for Ivan in the 46th minute as his club; Mersin Idmanyurdu lost 2-1 to Kayserispor at home on Sunday.

Kalu Uche could not add to his goals tally as Kasimpasa lost 1-0 on the road to Trabzonspor and Isaac Promise returned from his three-match suspension to help Antalyaspor beat Gaziantepspor 1-0 away.

Ehiogu Ehiosun was an unused substitute for Gençlerbirliği as they beat Istanbul BB 2-0 away from home. Ehiosun has played two league matches this season for his new club.


Former youth international, Simon Zenke got himself sent off in the 68th minute of Nancy’s 4-0 loss to St. Etienne at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Saturday.

Zenke who started his first game after his transfer from Samsunspor of Turkey got a straight red card in the 68 minute, with his team already down by four goals. Nancy have now not scored in their last six matches and are in 19 position with four points from eight matches. Zenke has not scored in Ligue 1 but has scored for Nancy’s second team in the CFA league.

John Utaka was not in Montpellier’s line-up in their 3-2 home loss to Evian TG on Saturday. The Nigerian is now expected back after the international break.

Rennes were also withouth their Nigerian defender, Onyekachi Apam, who is also out injured. he was not available for their 1-0 victory away over Sochaux.

Elderson Echiejilereturned to the Braga team after being excluded from their midweek Champions League exertions. The defender played all 90 minutes of an exhilirating 4-4 home draw with Olhanense on Sunday. He was shown a yellow card in the 67th minute of the encounter. Echiejile has now played three league games for Braga, who sit in third position in the Primeira Liga with 11 points from six matches, three off leaders, Porto, who have 14 points.

John Ogu came on in the 68th minute for Academica in their 2-1 home loss to Vitória Guimaraes on Sunday. the young midfielder who transferred from União de Leiria at the end of last season has now played five times this season, and has either been substituted or being a substitute for the five games but he is yet to score. Ogu scored three goals in 17 matches last season at Leiria.

Ahmed Musa was the star of the show when CSKA Moscow defeated Spartak Moscow in a Moscow derby on Sunday. Musa scored the first goal in the 15th minute assisted by Keisuke Honda and the Nigerian reciprocated that assist by providing a pin-point cross for Honda in the 52nd minute to seal the away victory over their rivals.

Spartak who seemed to still be suffering from the Uefa Champions League home defeat against Celtic in midweek had Emmanuel Emenike on for 76 minutes before he was replaced by Wellinton. Emenike scored two goals against Celtic in their 3-2 home loss.

Musa has now scored four goals as the central striker in the absence of Seydou Doumbia, who is currently injured.

Peter Utaka scored twice for Dalian Aerbin as they spanked visitors Beijing Guoan 3-1 in the Chinese Super League on Saturday. The Nigerian hot shot scored in first half stoppage time and scored his team’s third goal in the 74th minute. Utaka has now scored 19 times this season.
