Nigerians Abroad: Kasimpasa’s Kalu Uche scores fifth goal in six league matches

It was a weekend of drought in goals for Nigerians abroad as only one goal was recorded all over Europe


Mikel Obi played all 90 minutes of Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday. The Nigerian midfielder has been the brunt of some bad comments recently but he put in another disciplined shift in the centre of midfield with Ramires to help maintain Chelsea’s position on top of the table. Obi again gave a master class performance in helping his defenders with an 89% pass completion rate. He won 80% of his aerial duels and had 55 touches with three successful tackles and he also had a shot off target.

Victor Moses made another substitute appearance in the league as he came on for Oscar in the 73rd minute. He had a chance to score in the 85th minute but his volley was wide off the mark after being set up by Fernando Torres. He had a 100% pass completion rate and had two shots off target. Moses opened his goal scoring account on Tuesday against Wolves in the League Cup competition.

Everton won 3-1 against Southhampton and Victor Anichebe came off the bench for Nikica Jelavic but could not add to his two league goals.

Peter Odemwingie served his third match ban for the red card he received against Fulham so should be available for West Brom in their next match against Queens Park Rangers.


Dickson Etuhu scored his first goal for Blackburn Rovers in their 1-1 away draw with Charlton Athletic on Saturday. Etuhu made the switch from Fulham in the summer and it was the Super Eagles midfielder’s eighth game for his new club in which time he has received three yellow cards.


Ambrose Efe got his full debut for Celtic and played all 90 minutes as the Hoops defeated Motherwell 2-0 on Saturday and got a yellow card in the 84th minute. The Nigerian defender is now in line to make his Champions League debut against Emmanuel Emenike's Spartak Moscow on Tuesday. Rabiu Ibrahim is yet to feature for Celtic though he was on the bench last weekend.

The Nigerians in La Liga - Obafemi Martins at Levante and Nosa Igiebor at Real Betis, were whipped 4-0 respectively by Osasuna and Malaga.

Martins started the match and played all 90 minutes but could not add to his debut goal scored against Real Sociedad. Levante are in 12th position with seven points from six matches. Their next league match is against Valencia next Sunday.

Meanwhile Igiebor was not named in the 18-man match day squad after his two substitute appearances following his transfer from Israel. Betis will play Real Sociedad next Saturday.

Ahmed Musa’s CSKA lost to Dynamo Moscow 2-0 and lost their top of the table spot to Anzhi Makhachkala. Musa continued to play in the central striker’s role but could not add to his three league goals.

Victor Obinna Nsoforwas a substitute on Saturday as Locomotiv Moscow held defending champions Zenit St. Petersburg to a 1-1 draw away. Nsofor replaced Denis Glushakov in the 57th minute of the encounter.
Chinedu Obasi made a welcome return to action as he came on as a substitute in Schalke’s 2-2 away draw with Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Nigerian striker had been out of action since the end of last season but replaced Klass Jan Huntelaar in the 80th minute.

Again Joseph Akpala came on for Nil Petersen in the 77th minute as Werder Bremen lost to league leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday. It was Akpala's fourth substitute appearance for his new club. Akpala started last Wednesday's Bundesliga game against Feiburg and opend his goals account in Germany with the equaliser in the 48th minute. He was shown a yellow card in the 64th minute and substituted in the 67th minute by Nil Petersen. Bremen went on to win 2-1. Bremen are in eighth place with seven points from six matches.
New Eagles invitee, Ogenyi Onaziplayed his fifth league game as a substitute for Lazio in their 2-1 win over Siena at the Stadio Olympico on Sunday. Onazi replaced Ederson in the 60th minute. The young Nigerian has been filling in for the likes of Modibo Diakite, Stefan Radu and Cristian Brocchi were still out for Lazio. Onazi went close to opening his Serie A goals account but Siena's goalkeeper Gianluca Pegolo smothred his goal bound shot.
Onazi did not feature at all in Lazio’s 3-0 humbling by Napoli last Wednesday. The Biancocelesti are now up to third on the log with 12 points from six matches – four behind league leaders, Juventus.


Dynamo Kiev won 1-0 against Zorya with the Nigerian pair of Brown Ideye and Taye Taiwo playing all 90 minutes. Yussuf Ayila played his second league game of the season though as a substitute for Andriy Yarmolenko in the 86th minute. Lukman Haruna was not listed. Taiwo saved two goal bound shots in the match.

Michael Odibe was a substitute for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk against Shakhtar Donetsk on Friday but they lost 2-1 to the defending champions though they took the lead in the ninth minute through Ruslan Rotan. Odibe replaced Matheus Nascimento in the 65th minute. Odibe has now played six league games of which two have been as a substitute.

Michael Babatunde made a substitute appearance for Kryvbas and his third game in the 5-0 rout of Metalurh Zaporizhya. He replaced two-goal scorer Sergey Samodin in the 82nd minute.

 Super Eagles striker Kalu Uche scored his fifth goal in six league games for Kasimpasa as they beat Joseph Yobo’s Fenerbahce 2-0 in the Turkish Superlig on Saturday. Uche scored the first goal in the 73rd minute to help his club remain second on the league table. Newly-promoted Kasimpasa are a point behind Galatasaray. Uche was replaced in the 84th by Santiago Damian-Garcia.

John Utaka is still out with a hip and thigh Injury and was absent for Montpellier's 2-0 away win over Nancy on Saturday. Utaka is expected back for their next match against Evian TG on Saturday. Simon Zenke played for Nancy as a substitute for Benjamin Moukandjo-Bile in the 73rd minute. This was Nancy's fourth straight league defeat and sends them to 19th position in the 20-team league with four points from seven matches. Montpellier are up to 13th with eight points.

Onyekachi Apam was an unused substitute on Saturday when Rennes beat Lille 2-0. The Nigerian defender was in action last Tuesday in a Coupe de la Ligue match against Nancy which Rennes won 3-2. Apam was shown a yellow card in the 71st minute.

Elderson Echiejile (pictured) played his third league game on Saturday against Vitória Guimarães as the Champions League debutants won 2-0. He has though been excluded from the squad that will play against Galatasaray on Tuesday. There are speculations that the Nigerian defender could be on the move to another club in January and that may be the reason why he is not being used in Europe.

Kenneth Omeruo played his seventh game for Ado Den Haag in the 3-3 draw away against Heracles. He was shown a yellow card in the 82nd minute, his third of the season.

Uche Nwofor could not help VVV Venlo as they were thrashed 6-0 at home by PSV Eindhoven. Nwofor was shown a red card on getting his yellow card in the 65th minute. He received the first yellow card in the seventh minute. Nwofor scored two goals last Tuesday in the KNVB Beker Cup against Go Ahead Eagles though they lost on penalties. Nwofor has scored two league goals this season.


Former Super Eagles and Enyimba midfielder, Onyekachi Okonkwo played his second game for Orlando Pirates after transferring from Al Kharitiyath. Pirates lost 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtic

Greg Etafia was in goal for MTN8 champions, Moroka Swallows in their 2-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg. Swallows are up to fifth with nine points from six matches.
