Nigerians Abroad: Mikel helps Chelsea to the top while Ideye, Eneramo and Utaka all score

As the national team prepares to take on Liberia, some of the invited players continue to score for their clubs

John Mikel Obi was in action for Chelsea as they played their second game in four days on Saturday in the English Premier League. Obi played a sterling match and had a 95% completion pass ratio with vital defensive headers in the 2-0 win over Newcastle. He bossed the midfield in the absence of Cheick Tiote and had 73 touches with two tackles won and one shot blazed over the cross bar in the first haf. The Nigerian also played on Wednesday against Reading but was substituted in the 72nd minute as Chelsea chased the game. Chelsea came back from a 2-1 deficit to win 4-2.

The Blues are now top of the table with nine points though they have played a game more than the other sides. Former Wigan striker, Victor Moses was introduced to the Stamford Bridge crowd before the match against Newcastle and got a rapturous welcome.

Peter Odemwingie did not feature in West Brom’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Saturday because of a knock he got in training on Thursday while Victor Anichebe was on the bench for all 90 minutes as Everton won 3-1 comfortably away from home against Aston Villa.

Montpellier continued their miserable start to the new season when they lost at home 1-0 to Marseille on Sunday. The Ligue 1 defending champions have now lost two out of their three league games. John Utaka played all 90 minutes but could not help his side. He is yet to score in the new season but has provided two assists.

Simon Zenke played his first match for Nancy on Saturday though they lost 1-0 to Toulouse. Zenke was brought on in the 80th minute with Nancy searching for an equaliser. He replaced Joel Sami.

Former youth international King Osanga is yet to make an appearance for Sochaux as they lost to Reims 1-0.

Brown Ideye got back to scoring ways in Dynamo Kiev's 2-0 win over Chornomorets on Saturday. The Nigerian forward did not score in the previous two games but added his ninth for the season in the 72nd minute. Taye Taiwo also started and played all 90 minutes. This was Taiwo's fourth match for his new club but Lukman Haruna and Ayila Yussuf were not listed for the game.

Lucky Idahor played his seventh match for Zorya but could not add to his two goals. He was replaced by Ivan Rodic in the 65th minute.

Michael Odibe played his third match for Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in their 2-1 win over Volyn but compatriot, Dele Adeleye was on the substitutes' bench for all 90 minutes as his club, Tavriya played a 1-1 draw with Arsenal Kyiv at the Respublikanskiy Sportivnyj Kompleks, Lokomotiv on Sunday.

New Nigerian sensation, Imoh Ezekiel (pictured above) scored his third goal in two games as Standard Liege beat Mechelen 3-2. Ezekiel scored the second goal in the 58th minute at the Stade Maurice Dufrasne

Derick Ogbu started for Oud-Heverlee Leuven in their surprise 1-1 draw with Belgian giants Anderlecht on Saturday. He got a yellow card in the 50th minute and was substituted in the 81st. The Nigerian forward is yet to score this season in five league matches.

Kennedy Nwanganga did not feature for Genk in their 2-0 win over Zulte-Waregem on Sunday.


Peter Utaka scored a brace for Dalian Aerbin as they beat hosts Changchun Yatai 2-1 on Saturday. Utaka has now scored 13 goals in ten consecutive games. He has a total of 17 goals in 23 games and is the second highest scorer in the Chinese Super League.


Ahmed Musa scored his first goal of the season in CSKA Moscow's 3-0 win over Krylya Sovetov on Sunday. Musa who was played as the top striker in place of injured Serge Doumbia scored in the 85th minute as he enjoyed another 90 minutes on the Arena Khimki pitch in his fifth match of the league season. CSKA moved up to fourth on the table with 12 points from six matches and are now just a point from leaders Zenit, who lost at home 2-1 to Rubin Kazan without Obafemi Martins.

Emmanuel Emenike started on the bench but was introduced for Wellinton in the 20th minute in their 2-1 loss away to Terek Grozny. The Nigerian hot-shot has scored just a goal in the first six league games. He scored in the 2-1 deeat of Fenerbahce in their Uefa Champions League qualifier midweek.

Obinna Nsoforlost 3-2 with Lokomotiv Moscow against neighbours, Dynamo Moscow. The Nigerian did not start but was introduced into the fray on 73 minutes after scoring had been concluded. It was Nsofor's fifth match in the 2012/13 season in what has been an injury-fraught time in Russia.

Kenneth Omeruo enjoyed another 90 minutes run-out for ADO Den Haag in their 4-2 win away to VVV Venlo on Saturday. the young Nigerian defender on loan from Chelsea has now featured in three league matches.

For Venlo, Uche Nwofor was on show and though he did not score he provided an assist for Ismo Vostermans in the 80th minute. Nwofor has not opened his scoring account for the season.

Michael Eneramo (pictured above) started the campaign as he finished the last. He scored a brace against Mersin Idmanyurdu though it was not enough to earn a win as Idmanyurdu got two goals in the match to earn a 3-3 draw. The Nigerian scored in the 28th and the 33rd minutes.

New recruit, Kalu Uche played all 90 minutes for his new club, Kasımpaşa in their 2-1 win over Karabukspor while Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo also helped Fenerbahçe to a 3-0 win over Gaziantepspor to move to four points from two matches.
