The biggest football website in the country has seen an exponential growth in its online community just eight months after it was established to bring football closer to Nigerians
Goal.com Nigeria has hit the 100,000 likes mark on its official Facebook page. The impressive feat has been achieved just eight months after it was established.
The online Facebook community has been growing steadily in the last eight months at an average that has amazed the editors of the football site. The site hit 50,000 likes in August and two months later has crossed the centennial mark.
It has shown the intense nature by which Nigerian football fans want to keep up with breaking news about their favourite players and clubs from all around the world, something that the site offers to them.
The growth of the site’s Facebook page has also confirmed it to be the fastest growing sports community on the web.
Since its inception in March 2012, the website has run exclusive interviews with top Nigerian footballers like Obafemi Martins, John Utaka, Ahmed Musa, Victor Moses, Chikeluba Ofoedu, Sibi Gwar, Efe Ambrose, Joseph Yobo, Joel Obi, Ideye Brown, Nosa Igiebor, Obiorah Nwankwo, amongst many others.
The site earned a nomination in the Best Sports Website category of the maiden Sports Brands Nigeria Awards in July.
"It's a key milestone that underscores our commitment to delivering the best news and features to our discerning Nigerian readers," said Nigeria Chief Editor Lolade Adewuyi. "Every member of the Nigerian team of Goal.com has contributed immensely to helping the brand grow and we promise to keep delivering the best to our readers as we look to continue this tremendous growth of our brand in the country."
Peter Pedroncelli, Managing Editor for Goal.com Africa commented: "Reaching 100,000 Likes on the Nigeria Edition Facebook page is no small feat, and we are very proud to see Nigerians responding so passionately to the work of their local Goal.com edition, as we aim to become the voice of Nigerian football.
"The Super Eagles qualifying for the Afcon in style has us very excited, and we look forward to reaching the 200,000 Likes milestone in 2013, and why not one million in 2014?," said Pedroncelli.
