Nigerians Abroad: Peter Utaka and Brown Ideye continue scoring runs

The Nigerian internationals continued to stake a claim to a shirt in the national team with goals for their clubs

John Mikel Obi and his Chelsea team mates lost 3-2 to Manchester City in the Community Shield match that formally announced the beginning of the English Premiership season on Sunday. Obi played all 90 minutes of the encounter and he was caught dawdling on the ball on various occasions though his misdemeanours did not lead directly to any City goals.

John Utaka played all 90 minutes for defending Ligue 1 champions, Montpellier in their season opener against Toulouse on Saturday. The elder of the Utaka brothers provided the assist for Stephen Camara to score the first goal of the 2012/13 season though Toulouse came back to grab an equaliser in the second half.

Onyekachi Apam fell 1-0 with Rennes in an opening day defeat to Lyon in their stadium on Sunday. The Nigerian international defender, who has not featured in the national team in a long while due to persistent injuries, was replaced in the 24th minute by Ghanaian defender, John Boye.

Brown Ideye scored two goals against Volyn on Saturday to take his season goals tally to eight. The Nigerian also scored in the Uefa Champions League third round last Tuesday to help set up a play-off tie against Fenerbahce of Turkey.

Super Eagles fringe defender, Michael Odibe was on the substitutes’ bench for the duration of Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk’s 4-1 win over Hoverla-Zakarpattia. Odibe has featured sparingly for the club he joined on loan from Arsenal Kyiv.

Nigerian midfielder John Ogu made his competitive debut for his new club Académica in the Super Cup encounter against champions Porto in their 1-0 loss on Saturday at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro. Ogu played for relegated Uniao de Leiria

Peter Utaka created a record in the Chinese Super League on Saturday as he scored in his eighth consecutive match to help Dalian Aerbin to a 2-1 away win over bottom side Henan Jianye.

Utaka scored the first goal in the encounter in the 41st minute, to take his season’s tally to 14 goals in 21 games. However Dalian Aerbin are still flirting with relegation as they remain 12th with 24 points, just five points off Henan Jianye, who occupy the last position on the league table.

Obafemi Martins is still missing for Rubin Kazan but Ahmed Musa started his first game for CSKA Moscow and helped his team to a 1-0 win over mega-rich Anzhi Makhachkala. Musa, who has made substitute appearances in the league this season, started and ended the match.

Emmanuel Emenike and Spartak Moscow were on the end of a 5-0 pounding against Zenit on Saturday at Stadion Petrovskij in the capital. The Nigerian who top-scored last season returned to action under new coach, Unai Emery after missing from the starting line-up in last weekend’s win away to Dynamo Moscow. Emenike has one goal after four rounds of league matches.
