The Akure Gunners could only draw against the Afonja Warriors in the game that was moved forward because of trip to Algeria for game against Aso ChlefSunshine Stars of Akure have lost more ground in their quest to grab another slot on the continent next season after the club could only draw 1-1 at home against Kwara United at the Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode on Sunday.
The Akure Gunners draw improved their points haul to 53 from 36 matches and are currently placed seventh on the log while Kwara United are on 50 points with a game more in the mid table.
The game which lacked passion in the initial stages burst into life in the last ten minutes of the match with Sunshine opening the scoreline through Ajani Ibrahim who registered his first league goal of the season.
Just before the Akure Gunners finished celebrating the hard earned goal, the Afonja Warriors got the equaliser through Christopher Okoye.
The leveller jolted Sunshine and they sent all their players upfront in search of the winner in the dying minutes of the match. This yielded dividends when a Sunshine Stars player was tripped in the 18-yard box for a penalty.
Sunshine however failed to capitalise on the opportunity as Ofem Inah was unsuccessful in his spot kick to end the game at a goal apiece with a game to the end of the season.
It was the worst preparation that Sunshine could think of ahead of their Caf Champions League affair with ASO Chlef of Algeria on Friday.
