Lobi have moved to the third position on the league after Thursday’s defeat of the Champions League campaigners in Katsina Ala
Lobi Stars of Makurdi have brightened their chances of nicking a continental ticket at the end of the league season after the club defeated Caf Champions League campaigners Sunshine Stars 1-0 in a rescheduled NPL Week 5 encounter on Thursday in Katsina Ala.
The club got the maximum three points courtesy of a 51st second goal from in-form striker, Tony Okpotu promptly moved to the third position on the log with 54 points from 34 fixtures.
Okpotu who bagged a hat trick in his club's 3-1 victory over Sharks of Port Harcourt in the 2012 Federation Cup quarter final tie in Bauchi on Monday did the magic again at the Emmanuel Atongo Stadium, Katsina Ala.
The victory improved the Makurdi-based side's points to 54 from 34 matches and thus rekindled their faint hope of winning the league with four points behind league leaders Enugu Rangers.
In a chat with Goal.com after the encounter, Lobi chief coach John Zaki expressed his joy at picking the valuable three points and added that it was not yet time to celebrate the win because of the placement of teams in the top bracket of the table.
"It is another commendable outing for the team. We won 1-0 and I am happy that we are officially in the third position after all our hard work all these while. We know the race is still far from over but we shall keep on fighting until we get to our desired height.
"The league title race is still very much open and we are going to fight really hard to further put ourselves into the reckoning," Zaki, a former international said.
Sunshine's loss further slowed down the club's resolve to win the league title as they are still placed 7th on the log with 49 points from 33 matches.
