Oladunni Oyekale leads 12 Futsal Eagles to Cairo

The national Futsal team will leave for Cairo on Wednesday to confront African champions Egypt hoping to pick a ticket to the World Cup

Oladunni Oyekale, the Futsal national team coach has named the 12 players – out of the 20 originally called to camp, that will fly Nigeria’s flag against the Egyptian national Futsal team in a World Cup qualifier in Cairo on Friday. The team is expected to leave Lagos for Cairo on Wednesday for the crucial first leg of the FIFA Futsal World Cup African final qualifiers.

Coach Oyekale has been training the team inside the Gymnasium of the National Institute for Sports, National Stadium, Lagos, with the objective of overcoming Egypt, who are African heavyweights in this category.

Egypt have played at the FIFA Futsal World Cup four times and attended their first championship in 1996. They also qualified for the quarter final in 2000.

Oyekale picked 12 players out of the 20 players invited and the team is a mixture of players from the Nigeria Premier League, the National League and some players picked from the Gulder Ultimate 5-A-Side competition. The match in Cairo is scheduled for Friday (8pm Egyptian time).

The two-legged encounter will determine one of three African representatives at the competition which holds in Thailand in November. The second leg comes up in Lagos on June 24 at the Gymnasium of the National Institute for Sports, National Stadium.
