The national team was not able to travel on Saturday night due to the apprehension of a drug smuggler on the airline that was ferrying them to for the game
Nigeria’s national team were held back from their scheduled flight to Lima for a friendly international as the airline carrying the team was stopped from flying due to a drug bust on Saturday night.
The Iberia plane that was to take the team en route Madrid to Peru was stopped by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed Airport where they apprehended a drug courier while another accomplice is said to have escaped.
In a statement by team media officer Ben Alaiya, 18 players alongside coach Stephen Keshi were scheduled to depart Lagos at 8pm but a sudden bedlam resulted in the delay of the flight.
One man was arrested for attempted drug smuggling while another escaped leaving his international passport on his seat.
The team was then taken to a hotel in Ikeja to spend the night alongside other passengers when the airline declared that they could no longer fly according to international regulations.
The team is now scheduled to depart on Sunday at 9:30pm. Nigeria will play against Peru on May 23.
